Hey awesome onion ^^ For some reason the bottom feels a bit flat to me. I think it might actually be the outer edges of the onion which are a bit sharp and in some areas there's a bit of an outline. Try to capture the roundness of the object, that the edges of the object are angling away from us in space. Keep up the good work!
Very nice onion.
Don't be afraid to add some really strong highlights like glaring shine from the sun on top of the chrome bumper or polished hood. I like the perspective.

@ dierat: yes now that i look at it again it does seem a bit flat at the bottom. Must do more round object studies.
@ Lyno: that a great idea, im gonna do it right now
@ jackpot_anjr90: Thanks
@ Pigeonkill: Your right, some highlights would help. Mental note made
@ B-Man : textures... oh the dread
Lyno said that i used to much brown color for my skin tones and proposed that i take a look at Jens's stuff. It showed me that i have to take my skintones in a much more red'ish/pink'ish direction. I tried to apply it on this self portrait. .... and hrmmm still a long way to go ;P
- Some crap poses from imagination
- Some bridgeman studies. I tried to use the same technique as E. M. Gist. Where i first copy the bridgeman anatomy and then after wards put in some more realistic shading, so i get a better feel for the forms. Link to his blog here.
- Lyno said i should try to give the 2nd concept from my previous post, some color. I have done the head and some of his right arm so far.
It's very apparent that you're pushing yourself, and it looks as though your skin tones got a real boost from doing that intense self portrait study. Keep this work coming, I'm very impressed by what you have going already. Just doing more figures will help that to improve, because that seems to be one of the bigger weaknesses here, just keep studying! I admire how well you can keep this updated consistently! *high five*
Cool to see you're coloring it up man .
Some crits: His eyes aren't aligned and I would make his eyes a little bit larger. Also, watch out using a black bg.
Maybe you can adjust his feet, reposition his left feet (right for us ) so he stands more solid.
Otherwise then that, I've to totally agree with sketcheth.
@ sketcheth: Dude thank you so much yeah i definitely need to do some more figures
@ Peetaer: Thank you i will I might not finish the self portrait though, ill make a whole new one .
@ Lyno: Thanks for the crits, they certainly will be added.
I realized while doing the character that i needed to further my understanding of cloth. so.... here are some cloth studies. Between 10 and 30 min each.
And then some Vanderpoel studies, great book. Quite different from Bridgeman who tends to exaggerate a bit.
The skin tone study in post #248 looks great. Try to pay attention to the change in temperature in skin tones across the face. Some areas will be more neutral depending on how thin the skin is (like the forehead and the areas around the eyes will be more yellow than the cheeks).
@ dierat: Thank you for the tip on skintones, i will definitely try to incorporate it in my next self portrait.
For todays update i only have some poses from imagination. Excuse: () went to a family birthday yesterday which kinda took the whole day.
Alright Fumble mate, hows yourself?
Those fabric studies are good, havent seen that much in the way of fabric so its good to see.. also the skin tones portraiture is impressive.. definalty better with the richer reds as oppose to the browns...
Also, i just msged Braintree, there is a team CHOW on, looks like a laugh if you fancy it? Drunken Wastrel entry maybe?
"...the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert..." -Johnny Cash
@ Cuervo: Hey Cuervo Thanks !
As for the team CHOW i have to disappoint you me and Braintree will go traveling soon so we wont be able to join.
todays update. dierat said the the forehead and around the eyes the skin will be more yellow. Generally i should just be more mindful of skin thickness and temperature change. So i tried to take all that into consideration when making this new self portrait. I'm quite happy about the nose(though the nostril is very big ), the rest sucks. The likeness isn't very good neither.
And then a page of bridgeman studies.
@ jackpot_anjr90: Thank you - i cant wait neither
I have now been updating my sketchbook daily for over 2 months (Yay ! ), but today will be the last daily update for now. Im going out traveling (to wonderful California and other states ), but that does not mean that i'll not be drawing. Im taking two sketchbooks with me. Im planing to make at least one now sketch for every new place i go.
So on to todays update:
- Some vanderpoel and vilppu studies.
- I copied one of Slyx's drawing because i though it was cool. You can find his sketchbook here. therefore I DID NOT MAKE THE ORIGINAL DRAWING. MINE IS A COPY.
- Since ill be visiting the grand canyon i found a cool environment sketch in my "inspiration" folder. so I DID NOT MAKE THE ORIGINAL DRAWING. I only studies and copied it.
Fun zoo gestures.
For the moose antlers try to break them down into 3d cylinders, they are almost like a tree/coral structure that fan out. During the making in the Disney animation Bamby the animators had a tough time drawing the antlers consistently so all of them were given sculptures of them to draw as reference.
I think you made big progress from the first page of studies compared to the current vanderpoel studies, keep them up!

Your skintones are improwing. I would sugest to take it to the limit and do some studies with wicked skintones like use pink and blue yellow and purple in ways to make it look like skin. It will help you alot with the more natural realistic colors aswell. Cheers!
Definately keep doing what you're doing. It is nice to look at the progress.
omg so many replies
@ slyx: Thank you
@ Pigeonkill: Yea the moose aren't drawn that well, i rushed it .
@ RoboMonkey: Thanks
@ B-Man: Thanks for the suggesting, i'll definitely try it.
@ jackpot_anjr90: yep i'll definitely do some block-in studies
@ kingkostas: Thank you i will
@ tokotewhero: Thanks
@ Lakka: ok ill keep doing what i'm doing
Hey again all! I'm back from my holiday to the USA and i managed to get some drawing done while doing the whole tourist thing ;P. The first four drawings where done on the plane from the Copenhagen to Atlanta. When we landed in Atlanta we realized that Delta had messed up our tickets from Atlanta to San Diego, so that we couldn't reach our connecting flight in time.... :@. So we got stranded in Atlanta airport and put on stand-by. The next page were drawn in Atlanta airport. I drew some homeless dudes, because that was what i started to feel like , sitting around eating junk food, sleeping on benches and looking more and more ugly by the minute. I didn't draw on the flight from Atlanta to San Diego, i was sleeping.... right next to the toilets . The next five ones are from just scribbles done in different hotel rooms, the last one is a (failed) self-portrait i did while in Las Vegas. I gambled for 1$ , i then won 25 cent and i gambled them away as well (me has gambling problem ? ).
