Another figure painting practice. I never imagined painting skin would be so difficult.
Here's today's figure. I tried to use a different approach this time around-- kind of sketchy. There are some, at least to me, obvious errors, but I am done fooling with it.
There are indeed some errors but that is also a very hard pose to draw I think. Did you draw it from reference? The boobs seem to have not the same size and her left hand looks a bit weird. But I think if I tried that pose it would look way worse XD I do like how you rendered it (with the crosshatching).
The other figure in your previous post looks good to me
Art has come to a complete stop since summer has ended and I have to return to work (I teach). I just don't feel like doing anything and when I do it's on a large relief print that never seems to want to get finished.
I had to scan something today, so I threw a few doodles up that I've had for a little while.
This one is probably almost a year old. I know Texas is famous for having tons of armadillos, but Mississippi has its share of them too!
I was with my boyfriend at someones house who was hosting a D&D game. I don't play, so when someone started talking about an Owlbear, I didn't know if it was an official creature from the game or not. I just decided it'd be a cute thing to try and draw while I waited.
This is a feeble attempt at designing a character. I was short on ideas to start on, but somehow came to "old drunken vulture". It took me a while to come to something I liked and when I did, it wasn't placed on the paper in a way that I could draw the whole body. So... I have half of a character design. I like him though.
I wish I had the motivation to add color to my work more often. I just feel it's so time consuming and nothing I draw is worth taking the time to color.
I drew these guys at work last week and played around with coloring them in photoshop. I could have spent more time with the coloring, but I lost interest after I had to get up and leave it for a few days.
Amanda in post #61 a couple of tips:
Skin is difficult, but I think the background is compounding the problem. Try laying in a more neutral color.
Edges, again with the bg so dark, the entire figure looks like a cutout. Soften those edges on the shadow side.
Try working warm and cool. If you decide you want a cool lightsource, work the complementary warm color into the shadow and warm them up.
Keep at it though I enjoyed looking through your sb, you have some talent!
Here is my winning entry to a munny painting contest at my local comic shop. The theme was monsters so I decided to go with a classic.
Quick little piece I did today for the group CritterJAM on Deviantart. November's animal is the Binturong. I envisioned doing something a lot more stylized to show off the animal's crazy hair, but fell short of my original vision. I enjoyed working with my quill pen again though.
Here's some sketches that I've done over the last several months. Most are just studies, some are from my imagination.
I did this one after finishing up the Binturong painting. I can't help but think of Binturongs as cranky old men who don't care much for their appearance.

Here are some studies I did of flamboyant cuttlefish for this month's animal for the DA group CritterJam.
Here is the final piece I submitted. I have mixed feeling about painting this animal. While it's a fascinating animal to look at and watch, I had a hard time finding motivation to put it to paper. The cuttlefish's most distinguishing characteristic, in my opinion, is it's colors and its ability to change them. Being more of a draftsman than a painter, I found this to be a challenging subject.
While this is not something that appeals to my personal taste, I am pretty satisfied with the outcome. I kind of get a Georgia O'Keeffe vibe from it.
Thanks Lav. I find it hard to keep up with my human studies. Drawing people is not something that really interests me, I just practice sometimes when I feel down about not being able to do it. If that makes sense.

I created a clay horse to get the perspective right on the horse. I did not make one of the rider. Considering my lack of experience drawing people, I am pretty satisfied with him.
Here's the final image of the Horse and Rider. It's 4' long and painted with watered down acrylic. Pretty happy with the results.

Study I started but didn't finish of a Beast figurine.
I'm part of an online group that has members create pieces of work based on unusual, unfamiliar animals. March's animal is the Egyptian Vulture.
With this piece I wanted to show off the animal's face as well as the sharp contrast between its wings and body. While working on the head, I began to realize that the hackle feathers resembled a pharaoh's head piece, so I rolled with that as well.
Originally, I wanted to color this on the computer, but after scanning it, I realized it would take me far longer to color it the way I wanted it to look on the computer rather than just doing it by hand. So I went with a medium I was more comfortable with- watercolors. It's not as vivid in real life, but I was betting on my scanner to brighten in up
I also took some strong artistic liberties with anatomy. Hope that's excusable.
I love the horse on your first post, I want to see more like it! Your hyena and lion studies are really cool too

Thank you very much Art Minded. I also really like the crazy horse ;P I feel it has style and energy to it that a lot of my work lacks.
A somewhat quick relief print I made of a hyena in the style of my favorite printmaker, Leonard Baskin. I enjoyed working on this very much and will hopefully come up with more print-worthy images of hyenas in the future.
I haven't actually signed or numbered the edition yet, but as of right now, there may be 5 in the edition plus one or two more as artist's proofs.

lovin the relief prints. i like your use of colour. there's subtle creepiness going on in some of your imagery it's very atmospheric.

Thank you Jon. I don't feel very confident with color, so it's good to be reassured sometimes. The added creepiness isn't consciously added most of the time, but it is something that I enjoy seeing in art so I suppose it seeps through.
On this image, I decided that I wanted to paint something on the computer for practice. To add to the experience I decided to paint from an anatomy book I have called Cyclopedia Anatomicae by Gyorgy Feher and Andras Szunyoghy.
After finishing up the lion, I decided I needed some background practice as well, so I found an image online (which I can't seem to find now). Overall, this isn't something I find particularly interesting, but it was some excellent practice. Obviously all muscles shown are not labeled.
If anyone has any tips or advice, especially regarding painting backgrounds, please feel free to share. Eventually, I would like to be able to stylize stuff I do on the computer. This is too realistic for my aesthetic tastes.

My latest relief print! It took me a long time to come up with this one. Part of me still feels uncertain about it, but I do like it more than the original image I started with, which did not have the background texture or the moon/sun. It seems a lot of people that make relief prints try to avoid the carved texture in their negative areas, but I think in some cases it can add a lot to an image. Anyway, what do you guys think?
This was carved out on Sintra and printed on a 22.5Ē x 30Ē Rives BFK with Graphic Chemicalís water based ink. I believe this is my first print that Iíve made that has no margin, so the image size is the same as the paper size. As it stands right now, the edition is 7 + 1 artist proof.
Iím part of an online group that has members create pieces of work based on unusual, unfamiliar animals. Juneís animal was the brown hyena. I feel like I dropped the ball on this one. As much as I love spotted hyenas, Iíve never thought to draw or paint any other type. When I finally came up with a drawing I liked, I managed to beat it to death with watercolor paint until I was sick of looking at it. Then, the scanner decided it would have itís way with it as well. So now I present to you, my lovely viewers, a very well used image of what is supposed to be a brown hyena.
So for my birthday, my sister bought me a wonderful Moleskine watercolor sketchbook, which I wanted to break in when I move out of the country in early August. I couldnít help myselfÖ I just had to put something in it. I think this came about mostly because I wanted to paint an eye but have been looking a lot at old nature paintings and engravings (Audubon, Walton Ford, Oudry). Usually that style of work is not my favorite, but lately Iíve really been digging it.

Top piece is my rendition of Andrewsaurcus, a prehistoric mammal. The bottom one should be more obvious :p
