SUPER Stylised Challenge - December 2008 - Troll
Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine. Please post all images & questions in this thread.
IMPORTANT: By entering this challenge you give 3DTotal.com Ltd. permissions to reproduce the submitted material in 2DArtist Magazine and all subsequent editions of the Work (by which we mean 2DArtist), its ancillaries, and other derivative works, in any form or medium, whether now known or hereafter developed, in all languages, for distribution throughout the world. 3DTotal.com Ltd will credit each artist accordingly, providing they email firstname.lastname@example.org with their full name, conceptart.org name, email address and website (if applicable).
So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, paint it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!
This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!
What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!
What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine and we'd like the winner's image to be used as the article cover!
NEW: Please aim to create your final images, and save your WIPS, at resolutions of around 2000 pixels upwards, to ensure that when you images are published they are high quality. Any screebshots are understandably going to be screen resolution (72dpi), so simply capture those as large as you can when saving out your WIP stages.
There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.
For a valid entry, you must make sure your final image is posted in both the WIP thread before the end of the month - 31st December 11:59PM GMT - and then in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th January 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th January to the 15th January 2008, when the winners will be announced!
We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine ; these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!
Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline (31st December 11:59PM GMT), as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging!
Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!
Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!
1st Place Any 3 items from the 3DTotal Shop. We sell lots of items these days, such as our book , Design Studio Press books, textureCDs, Shorts DVDs, lots of training DVDs, and 12 month subscriptions to 2DArtist Magazine and 2DArtist Magazine .
Any 2 items from the 3DTotal Shop.
Any 1 item from the 3DTotal Shop.
We do unfortunately have to limit prizes to 1 book per winner per challenge, due to high postage costs for heavier items. Please note that we cannot offer the 3D Printed models as prizes!
New Voting Rules and Restrictions
1. In order for your vote to be valid, your post count must be 50 or above AND you must have been registered on the ConceptArt.org forums for at least 6 months. The ONLY exception to this rule is if you have contributed an entry yourself to the challenge.
2. If you want to vote but are not a contributor of the challenge, you need to have been registered on the ConceptArt.org Forums for at least the last six months, AS WELL AS have 50 posts already to your name.
3. It goes without saying that all voters MUST look through each of the entries before posting their score.
4. Finally, don't vote for yourself or get your friends to vote for you in an attempt to influence votes, it's not an attractive quality.
5. The 3DTotal team are all able to vote from their CA.org accounts some of us have fewer than 50 posts but we know who we are!
We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!
This month we have chosen Troll!
Here is a selection of Images from a simple Google search to give you some good references for this month’s brief!
Please don't start new threads: all design sketches, WIPs, feedback should go in this thread! Final Images should be posted in the 'VOTING' thread, which will be created at the end of the month.

I love it! Lynette, I´ve done some searching on the subject, and you could almost say that “troll” is a synonim for monster. They ’re really varied in forms and shapes, depending on the geographical location mythology (Sweden, England, Norway) , and that without looking at other recent encarnations like Warcraft world, Discworld, etc etc.
My question is... is there ANY limitation to our interpretation of the troll character?
Good luck everyone!
Sneaked a bit of time today for some Troll fun. I sketched a grumpy old Troll in a very basic hunch pose (I might give him an action pose now I have a look that I like). Below is the inital Pencil sketch and the first clean up pass with a scattering of liquify to help sort out some proportions. I want to add lots of dark hair but I thought I'd leave that for the later stages in photshop and just concentrate on the overall design and muscle structure for now.

Ok this is my initial idea, nice theme. I expect the other works realy good starts SOUTHERN
Wow SOUTHERN great job on your troll, absolutely love the design, the right hand (his right) is really good, conveys a good sense of weight and power to it, I can believe this guy would mess someones day up with that club! really cool work man.
Urih_pta2, nice sketch, the facial expression looks very curious and conveys a sense of stupidity in the troll, which i believe is what ur going for, so well done!
Looking forward to starting on this challenge myself, I got the community activities bug now!
nope! as long as your entry is a stylised troll-like being, it'll be fine. that's what these challenge threads are for though, so people can advise you and give their crits if they think you're straying too far from the brief. can't wait to see your entry!is there ANY limitation to our interpretation of the troll character?
great work everyone, as always

this was all done in PhotoShop.
I lay down on the rough sketch a couple of Hi-Res stone, rust and canvas textures,
used on lowered opacity layers, with different blending modes.
this gives you a nice random color+texture surface on which you can render out your image.
WOW, this is gonna be fun.

Richkid: A great character and very different. I enjoyed looking over your other work.
Chuckmate: Awesome lighting man. The gif was a treat to watch. I'd love to see you on a dvd working on a piece like this.
Tommoy: A dynamic little pose there hanging from the branch. You have the colours well balanced already.
Tuovi: I like the style. Looking forward to seeing that one fleshed out.

I'll probably add some background later this month as soon as I get some time. There is some really nice stuff already, I dig the cartoon simplicity of RichKid's idea and the cool lighting of Chuckmates' piece.
tommoy - yours look like a sweet start. loads of potential to be a great piece. I love the color scheme you got going so far.
southern - hehe.. thanks buddy. a video tutorial of me painting is in the brewing actually. and I just wanted to say I like yours alot. gritty bloody and brutal. what more can one ask for?..
alex boy - thanks! I really dig yours too. the lighting is cool and the design is nice and cartoon-like which is great.
jpedro - that is a disturbing image... in an awesome way. her face is outstanding.
good work everyone.
Hi.. This is my work in progress.
I have changed the original scketch because don't is a nice idea, for me I'm from spain and I do not know American Football rules, teams, players,... I prefer football (soccer ) ejjeje But the aesthetics of American football is cool. I see now Alex Boy ilustration, sh*t jejeje I hope you do not have any problem with my idea, I have not seen yours until today. Thanks
For the other works, amaizing, this month starts really really good.
Jpedro I love your troll jejeje
(really sorry for my damn English I hope that everyone understands)
Don't worry about it Urih, at least it's not hockey. Nice drawing by the way.
this is my first time participating in this contest. This is my first sketch. I did it a few minutes ago. I wanted to capture the idea quickly with elements of storytelling. I didn't want to work simply on a character. So this is the troll, Eggar. The title of the piece is "Who there?". Eggar is grooming himself by the river to look like his favorite Troll doll. This is just the simple idea. I will add more detail to his skin and costume in the painting process. Comments and crits are welcome.
Chuck, thanks dude. you're tha man, your progress gifs are always a treasure.
Urih_pta2, thanks to you as well! i think defining a clear lightsource and defining the form some more on your troll would really help. for example try and render the red cloth around his arm so that it actually looks like it is wrapping around the cylindrical form of that arm....it's a pretty fun idea you've got going.
AlexBoy. Southern and Richkid, sweet stuff! Artina, sketch looks real promising!
cheers to all
here is my w.i.p.
critics are very welcome!
