It's been a while since I felt comfortable posting anything in this section. The work here has only gotten better and better.
Every year I re-design the same image (a samurai with a flaming sword) to use as a gauge of my progress, and as a reflection of the sorts of things I'd done that year. This tradition started when I posted the first samurai with a flaming sword here when I was in college, and Jason Manly was kind enough to comment on it and tell me it was crap It was definitely something I needed to hear at the time and I'm really glad he took the time to do so.
This year I'm using my samurai illustration as the cover for my art book which will be ready sometime in the summer of 2009. Here are all the samurai illustrations.
2007 (no flaming sword ... boooo)
2003 (sorry for the crappy quality)
And here's the process, if anyone is interested. It's long, and there's no voice-over, but give it a 'right-click save as' if you want to see some fairly boring pen-tool action

Cover Process - Part 2 (does stream properly)

You have come a long way, awesome progress!
Your graphic design abilities are really intriguing. There is a lot of work for you to do, to get posture, anatomy, hatiching, lighting, linework etc. sorted, once you leave your stylized/ comicbook way of drawing. So I think, the first two ones are really successfull for what they are. If you would want to go into figurative illustration there are quite a few life drawing sessions ahead of you..
Ride on, I think you have a lot of talent!
2009 ? now you got the skill go get the Ctrl+N button b/w nice use of textures!
-----------------------2006 your composition was horrible. that white boxes wwwufff /\
I actually like 2003 -- but wow, you have blown up in just a few years. Wish I had that lind of progress curve. 2008 kicks ass!
I like the patterns in the first one.

doing the same illo every year is great! I like your progression. this year's is the best. cool stuff, man!
I like the way that you have managed to combine texture and 'painterliness' with strong graphic design in the 2008 piece - it brings all the elements you have been playing with together in a style that has a lot of confidence and a flexibility for many applications of subject.
I would be good to see what else you are doing like this, I really like it! I'm also envious of your colour sense.....
