So seeing as i started a sketchbook in the sketchbook board here some days ago i thought i might aswell start a thread in here too.
I'm a complete n00b when it comes to portraits so bear with me. Also this is my first self potrait in like... 5 years or so.. ya. It took me around one hour more or less i think.
Any pointers on how to improve will be greatly appreciated.

Can't say too much seeing as how we don't really know what you look like I would say keep drawin yourself and keep posting stuff up man. The reason I recommended this was because I saw this picture...
This guy is so freakin amazing. I wanna try to do thirty ... by the end of the year... so I have a little over a month
anibawl: Yea.. that guy is definitely awesome.
So here's a pic of me and a new SP... turned out kinda crap.

Hey there Imaginary. I see you're off to a great start. If I might make a suggestion, the white of the eye does not have to be as white as the paper. This applies mostly to the first two SPs though, but when you have an eye in shadow, there will be no pure white. If you take a look at some photographs (even the one you posted), the eye isn't always as white as you might imagine.
When doing a portrait from life, a good trick is to hold up a white sheet of paper next to your reference - that way, it becomes easier to see what might have seemed to be pure white, but is not in reality.
Also, you want to take your time before rendering. Simply your shapes with polygon-like edges and eyeball the length and angle of each line. Think of shadows as shapes as well. Once all the measurements seem in place, proceed to the rendering.
You're doing great - Keep it up man
Havoc-DM: Your advice is most welcome, thank you. I'll try thinking of shadows as shapes for the next one i draw tomorrow.
Todays SP... fast one, made it turn out absolutely crap.
Yay, the sixth!
Tried smudging.. it didn't work, kinda put me off so i didn't finish it. Also, thinking of shadows as shapes is hard. >.<
Todays SP. I really need to focus on getting the general proportions right for the next one...
I think i kinda changed the tilt of my head halfway through so it got all messed up. -_-'
Didnt really wanna expose you to the absolute crappyness this portrait is but i said one a day so...
Trying out charcoal, rushed it so it didnt turn out very well.. Think i'll stick to graphite for now..
There is progress in structure of your heads and the positioning of features in your portraits already. Try to remember that there are mucles and bones in those cheeks. Show 'em to us!
You seem to be consistantly making your head look too wide. You're putting about another eye-width on the outsides of your eyes (from the eyes to the sides of your head), whereas there is maybe half that on your real face.
Good work, and nice job making it daily. Keep it up!
My path to improvement: a.k.a, my lame sketchbook.
Thanks! And yea you have a point there, i'll pay more attention to that in my next one. Aaaaaaand I'll do some kinda grimace too...
Really good idea, tempted to do something similar, but I'm not certain of my resolution to make myself do such things.
Have a look at my sketchbook.
sjmarshy: Took a shitload of time to gather enough resolution to start both of my threads.. was meant to start my sketchbook and this thread a year ago but instead i played it easy and kept slacking between school and sleep. I'm glad i started them, no more time being wasted on things like games (im a counter-strike junkie.. or was rather -_-'). It's not like you have to do one every day btw, i'm just doing it cause im unemployed and have A LOT of spare time to get rid of. Just start a SP thread and update it whenever you feel like it, no pressure.
Fast one today, didnt spend more then 20mins which shows... no likeness at all. At least you can tell i made an angry face...

Another 20min one... i gotta start spending more time on these, maybe i should do them the first thing i do each day instead of the last? Yea i'll do that from now on.
Only thing i'll get done today.. so busy.. sigh
I really gotta work on my rendering technique...
I have to rethink my whole approach to rendering...
Really don't wanna show this one... again.. rushed it (10mins?) which made it turn into what u see below... I've made a schedule, not gonna spend less then 45mins on each SP from now on.
Sure the proportions are better but my rendering still sucks ***....
It's all over the place.. im gonna try a different approach tomorrow.
Well it turned out better then most of the recent ones...
nice lines in that last one. really has a nice feel to it. the only suggestion i have about it is that the line work on the neck feels a bit off. perhaps if they were single lines instead of a bunch in a row like that?
good job though, i think it's the best one yet.
*ViRuS*: Thanks! And ye the more i look at it the more weird it looks... :|
Think i need to start pushing values a bit further.. proportions are pretty good in this one though i guess
Have to admit i didnt spend 45mins on it, more like 25-30 :|
