On your last portrait the features look wonderful, but I feel the forehead is too high and the chin is a little long. I think your problem might be that you are rushing into the features too fast, when the structure of the head as a whole isn't sound enough. Before drawing in things like eyes, the nose etc, indicate where they are but work on the relationships between the different parts of the head. How much of the face is showing beside both eyes, where exactly the jaw begins to turn in relationship to the top of the head, etc. I can see you have an eye for detail, but improving on the overall form first will make the details stand out even stronger. Keep at it man!
Hey major I didnt see your comment before. I think your observations are correct but im pretty sure I have the mass right. I think the problem is in the value changes maybe. Ive been noticing a lot lately how the subtle changes in value can describe the form better than line for me.
I try to draw general to specific as much as I can but I still fight the temptation to just start rendering one are to death. In the young girls portrait I did that and couldnt balance the eye from early on.
Heres a bit more progress on the sp. More tomorrow
wow.... Very nice portrait pictures....
So i tried helpin a friend out at school with this self portrait assignment.
I set up a livestream channel and just blocked in something he could do with charcoal while he was watching. It would have been easier to do this at school but it was closed down for a holiday.
Heres a snapshot of what I did after 3 hours using the same reference he had at home. Ill get some pics of what he did tomorrow at class
Hey Steffler, you have some good stuff here. I really liked that little girl sitting down portrait. That showed a lot of sense of emotion and great composition. You also look like you are in some sort of art class because i see you working on an easel, or am I wrong? I am into portraiture also, i'm trying to get my structure down so I can do better portraits, and also be able to draw from memory is my main goal. Pce
Hey Steffler you got some real nice studies going on in here and there is definite improvement from the first page keep on drawing your getting there!
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all art and science.
Wow its funny how fast things can pick up. Had a great Christmas after a lot of bad ones, I havent been posting but I have been workin.
Heres what I have after a week to warm up to an actual life drawing class. 18x24 newsprint from class usually 2-10 min studies. The hands were done over a few hours and the left hand was drawn with my opposite drawing hand. Fun stuff
Im in 2 graphic design classes this term but my goal is to still put in 4 hours of drawing a day for now
Oh and Santa is a Rockwell master study with a ball point
Just checked out your Skbook good stuff big improvments with the portraits drawings from the first page. Keep them coming.
Hey man, just spreading some love!
Great progress between page 1 to here. Your hard work and dedication is paying off so keep it up!!
I think some of the problem is with when you shade in pencil is that your lines outside of your eyes are too dark and the way you shade them is basically one tone. Eyes have an oval shape but it's a bit subtle. Also when you shade, make sure that you keep your lines light. I think some of the outline is ruining the shading from making it feel 3-dimensional. Also, try to really block in the forms with big shapes first. I sometimes have the same issue. The wire frame is a good idea. I never thought of that before.
sorry... I didn't realize you had 5 pages in your sketchbook already. You've def improved and seem to have solved most of the problems that I mentioned. I really like that illustrator piece you did. That must have taken a long time to do.
