Sketchbook: From doodles to studies - Page 3
Yay I didnt paint on my outline layer this time.I think a screen layer worked out much faster. Opacity extends the control. Merge down then pick from local colors.
I took the boys to the Mcdonalds play land for a few hours and I managed to sneak in some Hogarth, and Bridgman studies. I'm not very comfortable with pencils. Sorry again for the poor scans
and a doodle...
Attempts at blending have not gone well. Painting with color is worse. I still need more practice with values
hey good going!!!!
Keep up the practicing!

The color on that last female portrait was scarry, I tried to fix it but the reference was from a movie i was watching.
Im really bad at these environments but they are fun to make up.
Ive just been toying around nothing much done today, mostly been looking into maya and 3ds max.
warming back up after some downtime
Ill submit to exhaustion after about 2 hours on this one. maybe to many mistakes to do more here.
Just been playing with layer styles maskes and alpha channels... whooo hooo
I came across the name Bert Monroy and found his webisodes pretty helpfull.
His show is called Pixel Perfect.
Ok so after Jasons class today on color theory I did make an attempt but I just dont get it with photoshop. I just start confusing myself when I think about multiply and overlay layers. So I just did a quick line drawing and painted values. I wasnt getting anywhere for a long time but I kept playing and its starting to work out.
I can see why having good lines to begin with will save you loads of time.
Great SB. I think that we have some similarities in our drawing styles. Keep on posting.

Wow I just keep listening to the class and I hear something new every time.
This is a master study from Lord Frederick Leighton
And I warmed up on some more of 3po.
some more, this is getting complicated. I need to find a way to work faster in photo shop.
This was originally done by Bushido. I really like the original and although I killed the anatomy Im happy with this one. This one took about an hour before I stopped.
I painted this at a pretty low resolution and it looks better than the ones I paint at 2500x3500
If I read his painting right, I saw warm highlights cool shadow. Again I dont know how to get photoshop to do what I want but this was close enough for the exercise. I just added some very desaturated color from the HSB palate on a seperate layer, setting the layer to color. I kept the brightness around the same levels I painted the values in.
My brain is melting from everything Ive learned in the last week.
pen notes from geology class,
another value study.. this is step 1
Hey, I can see a lot of gradual improvement in your work, Post 68 has a lot of potential, love to see it finished! Keep up the hard work. =-]
Thanks Jmon, Im glad you liked something.
I need to work with bigger strokes. this is taking way to long.
Im gunna finish this one I think. Ill work on the dress tomorrow.
Ok Jason got me distracted with facebook and linkedin stuff.
Heres the start of a self portrait. going to make an effort to do more from life and more on paper. My stuff is looking very photoshopish
In this step Im using this flat brush in an effort to follow the form. Brushing in the direction the light flows into shadow. I missed a few angles though... bummer
Our cat shares her pillow with my little one.
And some Bridgman heads done with that thing called a pencil.
So i downloaded the trial for Zbrush and what did I do first? I painted a 2d portrait instead of sculpting clay. It was fun though
another sp 30 mins
Zbrush is real cool.
Working towards a grumpy old man here. after an hour. This is my first object in Zbrush after watching a few hours of tutorials. only 209k polys still.
A self portrait in Zbrush. 1500 polys
I lost the symmetry about half way through. Im going to sub divide this mesh now and see how many polygons my comp can muster
and the profile. I had some trouble with the bridge of the nose. Im not sure how to add single vertices and edges without subdividing the whole mesh
Nice SB, I can really see your progress as I went through page one and three. I admire your courage on posting your SB. Im still trying to chuck it up and just post something already.
Thanks Lj, dont wait to start a sketchbook. It really helps you reflect.
Moving along with the self portrait. Im too tired to do the eyes tonight.
Busy day today not much time for practice. This is after reading Hogarth
