Hey gangsta ! good stuff ! your values improved really well ! Your also improved in your way of thinking, more focused on the form, less on the outline, it's a good point ! For the last study, you should post your refs too ! it'll be easier to give usefull crits, but i think that some values should be darker ! Now that you have some knowledge bout values, colors, shapes, and light, you should think about the different textures, and trying to render different material, like glass, metal, skin, plastic; etc . and you'll take your art to the next level ! Keep it up bro !
Doing well Sam - as usual a lot of progress going on here and as many others have said ...keep it up!

Possible super-articulated pose ref manikin!
Like that girl with the yellow hair, and the knight's pretty good too. Shows how far you can go with a little ref right? One thing: if your designing characters, try putting some swing into the pose. The guy with the squid bracelet could use some of that.
spoonfruit: 9 months actually...thanks
Walid D: I think I need to cover more of the basics first, thanks
The7Artist7: Thanks a lot
walnut: You mean a bit of gesture? I get you man, I always seem to build things from a pose that hasn't really been thought through. Thanks a lot
Mischeviouslittleelf: Ah yeah I know I know, I'm working on it Thanks
So I guess I'll let everyone know what's happening. I was on a bit of a spurt with that squid dude and the SP and stuff, and now I'm back on the plateau. Then, since I was trying to get things together for a portfolio, I only really cared about the outcome of each individual piece I did. I guess that's OK if you're working to produce, as I would be if I got work. But to be honest, I'm not happy as a productive worker. I guess it came from praise as well, feeling like I have to live up to an audience. I was just trying to outdo myself, and when I didn't I was just pissed off. I'm happier doing what I've been doing since the start, just working to practice, not caring about the outcome of each individual piece but just striving for the improvement. I guess I've become a perfectionist. I'm desperately trying to get back into just practicing for the sake of practice, but I just keep judging everything I make as if it determines my skill, and when I do badly it drags me down. I've actually becoming kinda scared of studying, just in case it goes wrong. If anyone else has had this problem and knows what comes next or how to get out of it, I'd really really like you to tell me. I just can't get back into that mindset.
Also any advice on what I should study and stuff would be great too, bearing in mind the stuff above. And don't be blunt, the last thing I need at the moment is someone telling me I suck.
Finished this piece.
No advice from anyone?
Unfinished SP (had to go out before I could get the colours down)
Trying to apply some of what I learnt about the trunk
I'll do better tomorrow
It's been ages, to be honest, I don't have much to say. You're approaching things really well, amazing dedication and lots of variation. It would be hard to tell you how to improve because you're doing a great job already.
But I don't want to waste space or time either. Gesture work would be time well spent imo. Quick pose drawings are the only thing I don't really see here and I think they would help a lot. Keep it up, you're doing so well!
Very nice still life, and I like the mind sketch. Some cool stuff in here.
I really think what you need to do is just work for yourself... you can't care what other people think. At this point in your artistic career you are studying, and that's all you need to worry about. Don't worry about impressing anyone here. First and foremost priority is bettering YOURSELF. You're pretty good already man, your digi self portraits have nice colors in them, and a lot of your mind sketches are looking solid, but to really take yourself to the point where you can start wowing people is to put your nose down and study. I can guarantee that the people here on CA truly appreciate a hard worker, no matter what the skill level. Just look at Algenpfleger, when he started he was shit, and now he's absolutely amazing. The only way he did that was by constantly going back to the basics and never being afraid of admitting that he doesn't know everything. My point is he never tried to convince himself that he's better than he really is, or even that he's as good as he is now, essentially, he's not afraid to make mistakes. And you see, by not being afraid to mistakes, and tackling his weakness no matter how bad they looked, he only improved... and so now he has very few weakness in his work.
So get out there, don't worry what anyone thinks, and just work to better yourself and make yourself happy, because ultimately you're the only person that will reap the full benefits of your work.
well man, i cant really crit your art because your better than me but i do know a little bit about your problem
basically man its ego, put it this way. you'd go into a conversation and be like, hey i'm sam i'm a artist, thats doing things through ego, but would you ever go
hey im sam, i've got 2 hands. you wouldnt because you dont attach any ego to your hands you just have them.
but in itself thats not a problem, but whats happening now is this, you have this title of artist in your head, that makes you feel warm and comfortable because in this big scary word its somthing thats solid that makes you feel good. and because of that you want to protect that achivment, thats when captain ego fag steps in, hes basically saying dont draw because if you fuck up your not a artist, if your not a artist who the fuck are you?
basically to fix it you have to learn to be comfortable in yourself, to quote a horrible cliche phrase "human being, not doing", this is basically self confidence, you have to be work to get to a point, were you could have amnesia, be ditched in a foriegn country not know anyone or have any things that tell you your cool around you, and be able to go, yeah, i'm cool.
sorry if i wrote this in a condecending way dude im hungover hope it helps though and hope im not being presumptius posting it
awesome work dude ^.^
Nrx: Pretty much spot on :| I feel like if I don't live up to the bar that I've already set then I've failed. Need to get rid of this ego Cheers
sebbonaparte: Yeah man! I've become way to comfortable, I need to get back into honing in on my weaknesses. I'm not ready to go Algenpfleger-style working just yet I don't think though, maybe when I'm 17 or something lol. Thanks.
Also, I realized I need to chill out. I've got loads of time and I should just have fun.
Hogarth Feet studies
Character from OC with Jordy, I won't show the rest of the stuff we did
You know it may seem like a slow rise to the top, but it's evident you're learning with each drawing you make. You know how you can find that moment when you're just making a piece and all that's on your head is how to make that piece? Well, that's a moment you need to keep in mind. All the ego stuff just comes between, it's so easy if you think about it for a second to stop paying mind to it. That make any sense? I'm a little fuzzy (ie drunk) in the head atm, so thing might not be translating very well. Anyway you're doing fine, that m
mr. Gasmask's got character btw.
i like the last one. The perspective makes it look bad ass. - The proportions seems right for the most part as well. No complaints i guess.
good foot studies. I should do more of those...
My observational skills may be great but i said nothing about my drawing skills

jordyskateboardy: LOL do it, yeah it was such a good session, we'll do more sometime too
Elz: Talent doesn't exist, I started shit and worked it up from there, I'd never been an artsy person before that. Thanks

Nice work! you still so young? lotsa naked chicks round here, my momma would be washing my eyes out with soap if I had been doing this ......maybe thats why I started late!

Life drawing from the garden
A great improvement indeed! The contrast between focused details and loose graphics can always help. You have a good sense of line works. I would love to see you harmonize your lines with planes of colors. Keep up the coolness Sam!
