Hiya, I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to start a sketchbook I really want to improve my anatomy, among other things. I want to get to a decent level so that I can be confident when the November workshop in Wellington rolls around.
Creepy style!!I love the first portrait,very cartoony!The skin tone for the second one are a bit metallic.
Your work is great.
The eyes are a tad large, but your hair and use of color are really good.
And The Bridgeman studies look good.

really like the backgrounds of the first 2! you seem to have great photoshop skills! your anatomy is not as bad at all!
Thanks for looking at my sketchbook guys! I'm currently trying to work on anatomy (my biggest weakness) by doing bridgeman studies as well as going to lifedrawing once a week.

I really recommend it as he has a way of explaining things that translates well onto paper - like he breaks down the human body into shapes and stuff that just makes everything click - if that makes any sense!

Here is a WIP - its for someone else's character (I don't usually paint frou-frou outfits like this) However it has been fun working on something outside your comfort zone. Any crits would be greatly appreciated -
Yeah!Last one is v ery solid!!Imo,her abdomen looks a little bit weird...maybe is too short or something or the curve of her hips is too pronounced and too high...
Looking really good. the only thing I would suggest is don't use small brushes to much on the larger areas unless it is to add detail. that middle one looks good but the last one has little details on the larger areas of skin. I do the same thing, and have to constantly remind myself.
Studies look excelllent too.

Hybrid_75 >> Its so easy to over detail, isn't it? I will discipline myself to work holistically and with bigger brushes I think its best to go back and knock back the details on the larger bits of skin. Here's where its at so far -

I had a good chat with Carl Dobsky at the Marama workshop and he really took some time to critique my work - I am forever grateful for that opportunity! He spent like 10 minutes critiquing everyone's portfolio in-depth, despite there being a long line of people waiting to show him their portfolios. So I've been keeping the points he raised about my work in the back of my mind every time I work on a new piece. Also got a few great critiques from Black Frog to keep me on track
The following is some lifedrawing, bridgeman studies and a digi painting. I really need to do more action poses, so you will be seeing some in the coming weeks

you have some very interesting colour chose, very vibrant en bright
but I personally think that in the last picture the blue on the end of her skirt draws a little too much attention , away from her pretty face.
and you probebly know it yourself, but your weakest point in anatomy is your legs.
But overal your work is really good and heading to something great
so keep it up!

Your work actually looks pretty good, although its hard to give much comment or crticism until you've got more stuff posted. Your anatomy looks good on the torso. Those Bridgman studies are AMAZING most people aren't able to really *get* bridgman, they just copy down his lines...which are rather vague and sketchy. You've shown that you understand the volumes and forms underlying.
One the legs in the last piece: They are too thick, and her knees are too high up, as well as being too vague (they should be projecting out, casting a shadow, the lower legs should be 'stepped back' from the knee). Try to get the idea of the bones and the knee joint, then you can think of the muscles masses as being attached around the 'axis' formed by the bones.
Also something seems strange about the way her feet dissappear into the grass...I'm not sure, but I think if the grass were high enough to grow stalks it'd be taller, maybe that's why it seems off.
Your faces are very good...color is pretty good. In some cases I think you could push the rendering and value contrast a lot more. Particularly in the character illo with the scythe...everything looks 'good' but it could be 'great'. The hair could be more lustrous, the scythe ought to be more metallic, and I think the lace on her costume got too blurry and grayed-out as you developed it. Basically just push the envelope some more, and try to get some more observations from life on light and color.

OH MY GOD BACK FROM THE DEAD! Its about time that I resuscitate this thing. What's been happening? Nothing too unusual - just working hard to improve my art and also got married I am also trying to get rid of my ADD that really hinders my work, because I don't currently get enough hours into a piece to really build it up to a worthwhile level.
Thought I'd start again with a piece that I'm currently working on....I hope it turns out good!
The scene is basically Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, battling a hoarde of munchkins - the munchkins are horrific little buggers who are trying to kill her, but she is going crazy with the tinman's axe and is fighting them off - lopping off heads, limbs etc. Should look like a children's book gone wrong.
Some studies (I do these so that I don't spend lots of time later on worrying about how to design the characters in the painting) -

Okay heres the linework.....not accurate, just to give placeholder info. I will fill in the details when painting starts -
Oh man where do I go next? Maybe start on the background in the distance first? Or maybe tone the whole thing......this process stuff is hard
The muchkins' eyes are about the freakiest thing I've seen for a while. I'd just watch how Dorthy's holding that ax. It looks like she's cutting with the fat side right now. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished piece!
