Alright, so thanks to some AWESOME critique earlier today, I was able to take some new lessons away and apply them to this piece.
Let's see what else I can learn today.
This is more proof-of-concept stuff for a Zelda cartoon idea etc. etc.
His heel is in front of the stone, which puts both feet in front of the stone, which puts that sword up against his crotch *hard*.
Your palette stays in the lighter values in all of your pictures. It's not a bad thing, but a little unusual for sword-and-sorcery.
I was once on the receiving end of a critique so savagely nasty, I marched straight out of class to the office and changed my major (sketchbook).
Yah what Stoat said, he's doing a serious MC Escher routine with that sword and his crotch... OW! Even if you fix the one heel, I think his other foot (the front one) is too low to be in perspective with the sword.
IMO the floating leaves should be opaque... or is that something about the Zelda games I don't know? I'm not real familiar...
The are a couple things that seem a little off to me. The leaves in the front should probably be a little darker to get a better sense of perspective in the piece. The blade on the sword looks a little flat, as if it's facing the front of the piece (I want to say the "camera").
Also, his right foot is pushing the boundary of the pedestal.
Ooooooook. Here's a bit of a quick fix.
The foot thing was honestly just something I let slip. I completely intended to have that foot behind the pedestal and I got a little hasty in finishing the piece and submitting it.
That'll teach me to rush headlong into thing. Thanks for all the great critique so far guys!
