This is a character I did a while ago. Likes and dislikes are welcome. My biggest question for this is if the overall color scheme is working. I can post thumbnail sketches of this character if you would like to see them.
I really like the design and the colours are ok, but the values are really blah The background is a bit too uniform in value and it just looks like it's a wall of haze behind him. With some punching up of the values this could get really interesting and even gain some eye flow... uh... Just tried uploading an example but CA is being pissy it seems. But anyways, if you lighten the right and darken the left along with pushing the values of the character a bit it should work out a little better.
Sweet. Thanks Jason.
I'd have to agree with jason on this. Your over all character is well done, with good crisp rendering, but he feels like he is half way to becoming the background himself. Although I wouldn't suggest too strong a alteration, you might even consider changing the color of the background slightly to help bring up that contrast, as well as deepening the background immediately around your character and in other select areas as well.
Here is a mini example of what I am pointing towards.
Thanks. Yea I'll play with some background tones. That pic is actually a desaturated version of the original but I see what your saying. I'll try and update asap.
My thoughts exactly. I have a pretty good idea of what I want for the background. Here are some character sketches I did for him...
Thanks yo. Check my sketchbook!
Agreed with points above. But one thing I'd really like to see here is to see something else done with his arrow quivers. Everything is very cool and has a kind of coral/boney feel to it. but the quivers just look like blocky hunks of wood sticking out of his back. they break the flow of the character and id love to see them with a more organic shape like the rest of him and with a somewhat similar treatment to the rest of the body. right now they're just really out of place and boring in comparison.
Well I've taken the suggestions and started to add the details. This guy seems perfect for a creepy forest area. I'll really get to work on it this weekend
Updates are looking cool - like the blueish tint in the flesh and grass, maybe pull in more of this or make it more saturated - could help to give the peice even more oophmf (how the hell do u spell that?)
Also watch the hand reaching for the arrows - looks like its getting impaled by them.
Great sketches and thumbnail work on this - keep it up!
I love where you are taking it, but i feel there needs to be more done to separate your character's limbs from the trees.
Good point. Maybe a harsher outline with the red light in the far ground. I'll give that a try
Updates are coming to the hand and the outline of his limbs.
The subtle greens are really adding life to this. Keep pushing, it is getting to be very nice on the eyes
Yea the background sure has! I've always loved forest type scenes anyway. I'm going to push the greens more.
Nice update - just keep an eye on the rim lights on the left - some are white and not quite the same as the rest. The white highlight on the front armour piece is quite strong too.

It's looking really nice but it feels like you can push those colors on the character even more to make him pop. Maybe consider a complementary color in the armor? Great work!!
Robo- you really need to fix that right elbow and forearm. You lost the perspective angle in the painting, but it is present in the sketch, so just refer back to that sketch and it should be fine. right now it looks off.

The lower arm or upper?
Hey Robo, nice piece you got and it has lots of potential... But you gotta push your values/complimentary colors to make it pop! Here I did a few adjustments to the image you've got so far
I haven't painted over anything, just sharpened the armor some and added complimentary color(overlay layer)/value adjustment. But I think that before you really get into those aspects you should work on fixing up the top left arm(our left). The way you have the bracer there on the upper arm makes it look flat and not bent coming towards us. other than that I think you could maybe polish up the top right hand. More could be done here and there but mainly just to polish everything up I'd say. Well, hope that helps and goodluck
