sure Colt, i am here, just ask what you need to know.
I'll update this one.
Ok, cool, well my biggest problem is to make the painted elements not look that much as if they were painted. How should I melt fotography and painting together best.
I have tried to overlay both with a common color, so that everything shares the same tone, but that doesn't help that much. If you got some time left maybe have a look at my SB. I recently finished a matte painting, then you will see best, what my painting lacks of!!!
I am following, but I do not understand what is happening on these last images, I see that it is a photographed city from above, but I am not sure what is the point here? If I am right that matte painting is painting on glass in movies for unreal and hard-to-set-up ambient? Can you explain what it is this all about, are you merging photographs, or are you actually painting these buildings?
I looked trough your entire sketchbook twice and I'm in a total awe! I really like the spontaneous feel a lot of your concept sketches have. Some of my favourites are definitely the underwater ones and the one with the helicopter. Keep it up, I wanna see more.
Nice update, giving me whole new ideas how to add new content to an existing picture. Looking great sofar. Already got an idea, what theme this picture will be about? Most artists only destroy architecture, would be nice to see something different by chance!!!
Curious what will come next!!!

@Colt: theme is 2012 so YES to destruction, here is link for challenge. You still have time to participate if you wanna(you can learn some amazing stuff concerning matte paint)
@LtPlissken: Look at previous page. You can see start of this matte painting there.
Let me explain(that is point of this wip). Matte painting is usually set(mostly background)extension for movie, tv comercial, etc.
In early days it was done on glass by paint, but today it is digital.
Basicly it is merging of photos+painting to get something that doesn't existe in real world(or do existe but need to changed, extend, or something else)
So on previous page you can see original plate(original photo i have started with)
Hope this explain things a bit
here are some links for matte paintings i did.WIP!

Sry, I didn't know first what was ment with 2012.
I love 3Dtotal.com and I visit that site almost daily, but because of some reason I can't register there. I already sent an e-mail to the site's admin about 2 month ago, but they never replied to that. That really sucks!!!
great colours and eyes! Man your works are inspirational!
Space-sprayer, thanks man, glad you like it. About photos it was pain in the ass to find this angle. Try flickr, but be ready to spend many hours to find good photos and matching ones.
Here is new update. Trying to work on a drawing/painting a bit
Great new stuff, I like those loose strokes on the last ones!!! I wished I could do such quickies with such a good result!!!
PS: Time to subscribe!!!
been a fan for a long time still have this image saved in my favorites folder! the matte paintings are turning on wonderful, are you using tutorials or just eyeballing and blending/transforming till you get it right?
oh also your painting style reminds me a little of Jenny Seville, great work keep up the hard work mate!
Thanks Colt, glad to see you here.
snootchy, eyeballing and blending/transforming is what i do, there is no other way, maybe with 3d would be easier, but that is way i do. Btw thanks for " style reminds me of Jenny Saville" that is a something i was trying to achieve, technique wise!
great work.... !
haha awesome mate thanks for the info! you got me so inspired to start thinking about matte painting =D great brushwork on the last post! Are you in art school or working in the industry?
