The studio space allows us to deliver a modern approach to traditional art education. Each week you will see a demo from your instructor working LIVE on the big screen. Follow along, learn and watch as the instructor guides you through industry specific workflows, pipelines and techniques. Each week you will be given set homework and each week you will get you homework reviewed and get one-on-one feedback from these industry PROS!

This is the course for those dedicated to building their skills and putting themselves on a career path within the entertainment industry. The CDW STUDIOS long course packages are designed to give students an immersive experience into the world of drawing, painting and design for the entertainment and visual effects industry.
This course is suitable for students, graduates, teachers or those looking for a change of pace. There is no pre-requisite for entry, however, this course is very intensive and a real passion for drawing and design is required.
During the CDW STUDIOS long courses you will learn from working industry professionals. Our intensive course helps students put themselves into a professional mindset and experience the standard of work that digital artists must meet in the workplace. Classes are relaxed and instructional with opportunities to ask questions as you work and solve problems as you encounter them. Teachers address common problems and work with students to help them develop more efficient techniques and build a solid body of work that will then make you as a student more employable within the industry.
This intensive training package will take your skills to a new level so you can wow potential employers with your dedication to learning and producing work of the highest quality. Scholarships will be awarded on a merit basis and will be announced Feb 2, 2014 (submission deadline is Jan 31 2014). Students are required to submit 4 examples of their best artwork. CDW Studios 2 Term package includes:
- 4 classes from the class listing per term.
- ART BOOT CAMP on Mondays 12pm-4pm. Compulsory for all long term students.
- Life drawing each Friday nights 6-9pm.
- Sketch club each Tuesday afternoons. 3-5pm
- For the long course students the studios are open from 10am-5pm Mon-Fri so you can come and work as a group and get all your homework done!
ART BOOT CAMP with TIM MCBURNIE (COMPULSORY FOR LONG COURSE STUDENTS)
Art BOOT CAMP will push your understanding of drawing and art fundamentals. Tim Mcburnie will take you through a series of intensive assignments aimed at developing your foundation skills. You will focus on learning Advanced Perspective, Anatomy, Form Drawing, Shading, Posing Characters, Lighting and Color Theory. The course is designed to help artists of all levels. However, dedication will be important as the workload is high, and you will be expected to complete each week's assignment on time. Regardless of your skill level, If you stick with it, your fundamental skills will improve and you will become more confident when dealing with the technical aspects of art. This course is the one to take if you are serious about working professionally as a commercial artist. Having a strong foundation is a key part of dealing with the daily challenges you will face when working on professional jobs. His client list includes companies such as Blizzard Entertainment, Blur studios, Relic Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast.
DRAWING FOR COMICS with TIM MCBURNIE
International comic book artist and writer Tim McBurnie takes you through the world of sketching, drawing and painting for manga and comics in this 8 week course. Tim works in the French comic book market as well as animation and video games. His client list includes companies such as Blizzard Entertainment, Blur studios, Relic Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast. This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of drawing for comics using photoshop. We will cover the fundamentals of anatomy, perspective, and composition along with colour theory. How to create rough sketches and finished lines. Plus techniques and processes for creating images from our imagination.
ADVANCED 3D SCULPTING with STEVE CYPREOS
This course is an exciting exploration of the world of digital sculpting, suitable for students that are comfortable within the 3d space including Maya and ZBrush and looking to hone their skills further. Through this artistic process we will explore the 3d Sculpting programs tool sets, learning technical skills and having fun along the way. The technology to do this has only become available in the last decade and has attracted many artists and changed the way digital models are created for film.
INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING & CHARACTER DESIGN with PETER YONG
Concept and Storyboard artist Peter Yong takes you through the fundamentals of drawing and character design. Peter Yong has worked in the animation and video game industries for nine years. During this time he has worked for companies Disney Toon Studios, Cartoon Network, Pandemic, Defiant and Blue Tongue Entertainment. In this 8 week class Peter will guide you through the the basics of drawing and character design. Topics will include perspective, drawing simple forms in 3d space and painting in photoshop. There will also be a focus on designing and constructing your own characters. This course is aimed at beginners and will give you the perfect foundation for your art career.
MAYA CHARACTER RIGGING with JARED EMBLEY
Rising Sun Pictures rigger Jared Embley will take you into the world of Maya character rigging.Jared will cover topics such as inverse kinematics, joints, control objects, constraints, parenting andskinning. Through the 8 weeks you will learn how to rig a bipedal character. Students will take a modelled bipedal character and articulate ready for animation using systems such as reverse foot setups, FK and IK switching, global scaling, space switching, stretchy IK and weighting painting. Jared has 8 years professional VFX experience working on projects such as: The Hunger Games, Battle Los Angeles, The Golden Compass, The Wolverine, I, Frankenstein, The Seventh Son and many more.
CREATURE DESIGN FOR FILMS with NICK PILL
Rising Sun Pictures VFX Art Director, creature designer and matte painter Nick Pill takes you through the art of creature design for film in this 8 week course. This course teaches the fundamentals of creature design from silhouette, designing, digital painting and also ZBrush. Nick will focus on the use of design principles and how these theories should influence your choices as a concept artist and creature designer. Nick will cover topics of how to generate ideas, gather references and how to design and render your creatures. Nick will show you how these designs can be interpreted in a VFX studio environment and pipeline.
INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PAINTING & THEORY with SIMON SCALES
Video game environment designer, LEGO concept artist and matte painter Simon Scales takes you through the art of creating compelling digital art in this 8 week course. This course teaches the fundamentals of digital painting including colour theory and design theory. You will gain a thorough understanding of how to use Photoshop and a WACOM tablet. Simon will cover topics of how to generate ideas quickly, gather reference, paint interesting compositions and use perspective that help form the basis of fully realized digital paintings. Simon will then work with you put these into practice within your own work. The final few weeks will focus on lighting and colour and Simon helps you focus on creating artwork for your portfolio.
INTRODUCTION TO 3D ANIMATION with ANDREW KUNZEL
Over the last 5 years Andrew Kunzel has spent much of his time animating and also animation directing two television series for the ABC, Horace In Slow Motion and Figaro Pho. He has also animated in the films Scooby Doo, Ghost Ship and the Black Gates sequence in The Return of the King. Andrew will be demonstrating some of the fundamental principles of animation with an emphasis on how to make that process creative and fun.
We will be covering animation concepts like “key frames”, “timing and spacing”, “overlapping action”, as well as the more general story telling and acting performance skills plus the software skills needed in Maya. This course is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those with some animation experience.”
DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION with TIM MCBURNIE
International comic book artist and writer Tim McBurnie takes you through the world of sketching, drawing and painting for illustration in this 8 week course. Tim works in the French comic book market as well as animation and video games. His client list includes companies such as Blizzard Entertainment, Blur studios, Relic Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast. This course builds upon illustration fundamentals and moves onto topics such as storytelling and visual narrative. How to stage complex scenes. Advanced construction drawing and perspective. We also delve deeper into Photoshop; discovering new techniques to help take our illustrations to the next level.
3D SCULPTING with TYLER BARTLEY
This course is an exciting exploration of the world of digital sculpting, suitable for beginners as well as those with intermediate experience looking to hone their skills. Zbrush uses painting tools to sculpt highly detailed digital models. Through this artistic process, we will explore the 3d Sculpting programs tool sets, learning technical skills and having fun along the way. The technology to do this has only become available in the last decade and has attracted many artists and changed the way digital models are created for games and film. Tyler will guide you through step by step the process of developing 3D characters and creatures, you will learn all about anatomy, design, texturing and 3d toolsets during this 8 week course.
