Update before bed. Lots to do. Ignore sketchy placeholder lines. Just needed to get an idea of size while I set down some messy BG colors.
YAY your not constipated anymore..... A good CHOW will do that for you. I am loving the lighting in this Mock just gorgeous.

Starting 2009 off with a crazy move across the country to Arizona, signing up for figure drawing sessions that actually involve real models, and trying to get everything unpacked so that I can get back to drawing.
Thanks to everyone who has commented and critiqued over my first few months here at CA. You guys keep me motivated.
I plan on making 2009 an amazing year which will end with me considerably advanced on the path to becoming a pro concept artist and (with a little luck and a lot of work) will find me in San Francisco by the end of the year.
Updated CHoW WIP. Hopefully will have this finished tomorrow or the day after, providing I can find my tablet mini display adapter.
Just a quick face doodle before hitting the gym. Trying to get use to painting faces without references.
I can't wait to see that three ghosts finished, such a great play. I like how your taking The third ghost, he easily is the best to be creative with , well in my opinion anyway! Keep it up , love the stuff you got here!

your portfolio is really stunning, although that king in green looks gay so far, I'm sure that it's caused by contrast with dark tough guy on other side. Also, are you going to add more space above her head?
Another thing, your unfinished chow, post #85 made me ask, if you think enough about purpose of things, armors. It definitely looks cool, but her helmet makes her look prepared for battle but that armor / cloth on her chest with large hole on her belly makes it useful hardly for somebody else than Judean People's Front crack suicide squad from Monty Python's Life of Brian.
Anyway, I really love your style, keep going, I hope to see more work from you. Good luck with CA atelier!

Jonish: Haha, thanks. I'll need it. =P I was originally going to add more space, but I don't have time to push it any further due to impending social interactions (aka; alcohol and poker). And yeah, the armor is completely impractical, haha. But I just pass it off as saying she's a magic user or something and thus only has to wear armor for its stylish appearance... or that I just felt like painting skin.
Alcazar: Thanks! I had much grander plans for it, but with the move and holidays there just wasn't as much time as I had hoped. Yours is looking kick ass as well. I love how you use colors.
Exy: Yeah, the third ghost definitely has the most room for interpretation it seems. That one was my favorite to paint.

when it goes about last picture...i think u should give another skintone for the man on our left..while actual is to pink PINK for me fellow in our right should b a little bit bigger...imo ( he's that christmas ghost right?)
woman should have a uncovered face..but that's all my opinion about composition and colors man
Selfu: Yeah. I can definitely see how that would make it better. I crapped out at the end and rushed so much of it. I think I may go back and repaint the entire thing for practice later on.
Playing around with painting with a ton of transparent layers and rich colors after looking at a lot of ruanjia's work. So far I'm enjoying it. Might try doing a full image this way later on.

Your work looks really really nice man, I'm digging the brigdman studies, and you're digital paintings are looking better and better. However, there are a couple of things I see with the painting that I'm not sure about, mostly concerning the king in the left bottom. His skin tone looks a little too cheerful, but that's not a big problem. What is important is the composition of the piece. Even though the king is in the bottom part, he attracts a lot of attention because of his green cloak, which complements the red around him and makes him stand out a lot more than the girl, which I would think is your main focus in this work. Also to comment on the story in the piece. Who are these people, what are they doing there... what is their relation. Technically, the piece is really nice, but compositionally and story-wise, it's a bit lacking. Very nice work though, and I might just be reading too far into a piece of concept art, but I thought I should point that out.

I love the way you shade, espec your model drawing. its very soft, but always retains that 3rd dimention. I think sometimes, like in the last post, your faces get a little big for the bodies. but its pretty good anat wise as far as I can tell. I think you shoulda just gone with the right figure for the CHow though- hes so much more awesome then the rest.
Hi Mock! I've been looking around here and I really like your style in your pencil drawings.
Your 'ghosts of Christmas' chow, I like the third ghost is the best. The other two just seem out of place, the colors look too bright.
I like the cleanliness of your studies, it's what I (at least attempt to) go for too, though I guess I should spend more time just getting the positions and shapes right before worrying about clean line work .

Vehkt: Thanks. The clean line work comes from doing all of the shapes and finding the anatomy in really light strokes, and then going back over it with darker lines after I've figured out what is suppose to go where.
Sheetghost: Thank you! Yeah, looking back on it I definitely should have balanced things out a lot more.
Ashess: I think almost every aspiring artist is into Bridgman, lol. Or should be. He makes remembering anatomy much, much easier.
Sebbonaparte: Thank you so much for the in depth critique. I will probably revisit the painting later and try to re-do it, so that will come in very handy.

A few more pages of Bridgman studies, and my very first figure drawing done from a model last night at the Dr. Sketchys in Phoenix. If you have a Dr. Sketchys event near you (there's a thread with all of their locations in the Art Discussion forum), please go. It really is an entirely different experience drawing from such a great model.
Thing I learned from my first life drawing experience:
1. Do not just bring a .5 lead pencil.
2. Don't forget you kneaded eraser.
3. Don't draw the models entire head at 3/4 of an inch tall.

That's a terrific job for your first live figure drawing, I just did my first today as well, it was thrilling. Your's looks very nice, and to be honest it took me a while to come up with anything to crit. I found it in the foot. The feet have to be one of the hardest parts of the body to nail just right. In this case you were doing everything right until right after the ankle. Then the foot turns 2d. You didn't define the form of the foot soundly enough. Some sort of shading to turn the planes of the foot would have helped a lot, and possibly some definition on the big bone connected to the end of the toe. If you watch out for that (which I have plenty of trouble with) then you should be in awesome shape.
Also just wanted to say, please don't take my crits too harshly on yourself. Since we're fellow SSG members, I figured it would be good for me to find something... anything really that I could find to crit you on. I feel like the biggest nitpicker, I hope you don't mind.

Your imaginative renderings in photoshop are getting nicer indeed. Your not afraid of the "carpentry".
I've read from Mentler and Hale that doing the front profile, without showing the two sides of the mass, can be quite a crutch since it is read that It flattens the figures. Next time try and tilt it a bit to work that brain!
With the christman carol piece, I suggest more expression in the face to make it stand out. Study facial expressions. Also needs more of a compostion to it to help guide the viewers eye. You can expierement with it with thumbnails. Needs some gesture/action to make it "alive".

Seb: Yeah. Feet are something I need to make sure I draw into my images more. I have a tendency to be a lazy ass about them.
Fitzin: Will do! I picked up a book today on expression, so more of that will be popping up in here soon.

DaStreets: For good studies the only real thing I can say it "again and again." The best way to learn from studies rather than just copying work is to analyze what you are drawing, and draw it so much that it becomes stuck in your brain.
The past couple of days have been insane. I'm busting my ass trying to get a decent portfolio together to show to Carl at the Dallas workshop, so I should have a massive sketch/study/color update by the end of this week. Right now, here's an idea doodle I did for an image involving the same species from post #82.
