Yes. I'll make it transparent with undulating sand, sort of shallow, but enough for a few fish to swim. There's the shadow of the shell to consider as well as the ripples, but I'm hoping to keep it mainly the same colour.
Okay, the hand - I enlarged it and then thought the arm was too long, so I shortened it. I have both versions so I can change my mind yet again even if I carry on working as I can transfer the layers over
You are so right. Thanks a lot. I'll redo it again. What an idiot I am!
I could never forget you Grandma.
Rotor, I took so many years off not doing anything, that now I want to push myself as hard as I can. There are still some nights when it feels like a chore to start with, but once I really get in there I forget all that.
Something to think about with the arm and the hand is that your figure is foreshortened but the arm and hand are not. Under normal perspective the elbow would line up about with her waist and the wrist should line up with the bottom of the crotch, and the hand should be the length of the face. Considering that the arm looks parallel to the viewing plane, it should appear longer than usual and the hand should appear larger than usual. Unless you intend for the arm to angled away from us and foreshortened as well.
Again you're right - hopefully now corrected.
I posted this in the NB thread, but I though I'd put it here as my friends are a lot more honest in crits. The right hand one is where I took it into PhotoPlus to smooth her out, but that was just a test to see what I could do with it as a final render. I'm going to check with Serif if I can import the layers separately. Her right thigh will be sorted next.
Latest version. Put the water in and some fishes. When I took it into PhotoPlus this time, I started playing with some on the other tools, yes, I burned it a bit. The bit under the knee needs to be darkened a tad.
The water looks great! Right now in terms of color, the piece is a bit bipolar. Maybe you could add some pinkish fish in the water or have some pink reflections below the shell bouncing off the highlights of the water to spread the pink around a bit. And don't forget to add a little green from the water into the shadows for the figure and the shell.
I'm loving your idea too and I've been watching its beautiful progress. I don't agree with adding pink fish in the water, but dierat has a good point with the reflections.
your penwork with the skeleton = awesome! looks very proffessional, and the amount of colors in ur "battle of the sexes" is great! Your life studies are very effective too, just watch out for small feet
Didn't get any work done yesterday due to Andy Murray taking 5 sets to win.
It's now a matter of refining it. I've got to do a lot more on the hair as it looks a bit ropey in places and darken some of the shadows a lot more. I will be putting some pick reflections on the water.
Do you think a couple butterflies would be a bit of overkill?
Just going to change my keyboard as my youngest has made it horridly stickly and it'll need a good wash.
Washed it this morning and I'll plug it back in tomorrow when it's dried.
Didn't like it with butterflies, so I'll work on it as is.
It was all over by the time I got home from work. It's too hot to think, let alone draw. I'm just about managing an hour in the morning. I exported at the biggest I could 550 dpi, it crashed at 600, and then reduced it to A3 to work on in PhP. Not being totally familiar with the programme, I started again three times this morning. No butterflies and no seagulls. I'm working on the KISS approach.
My washed keyboard wasn't working this morning and I'm still on this crappy one where the curser buttons don't all work and neither does all the number pad. Might have to get a new one if my old faithful (letters faded to nothing) doesn't dry out.
The venus piece looks really beautiful Maybe a couple fishies jumping out of the water? Dunno, But the colors of the sea came out perfect
aw; ( and what program are you using?
hala I started in Serif DrawPlus X2 and now I've moved to PhotoPlus X2 to smooth things out. DrawPlus is a vector programme and I layer everything at 2-4% transparency.
Saying that I don't know PhP very well and I've been crashing and having corrupt files over the last few days. Finally, yesterday I've managed to sort it all out. What I don't understand is that I exported the picture in 4 different layers as tiffs (keeps the transparency) and they were all about 20Mb, then when I put them all together, the file is only 17.9Mb, not that I'm complaining - the one I was crashing was 219Mb.
Okay here's the body. Still haven't smoothed out the butt and legs, but I'm tired.
More smoothing of the skin and starting to add the real darks.
Thanks, that's near where I'm aiming.
Been working on the hair this morning. I'll get it the same all over before refining it more.
Gee there are some stupid comments in the Newborn forum. It's water off a duck's back to me, but some artists may be hurt. I only suggest alternatives if they are requested - way to trample on people's personal vision folks. /rant
This is just the under painting of the hair, which has taken about 10 hours so it looks a bit like string. There is just over two weeks to go and I'm beginning to panic that I'll never get it finished to the standard that I've set myself. Work is being pretty stressful at the moment (a pox on merchant banks) and I don't have time to go to life classes.
The dots on the arm is my pallet - forgot to exclude it when I exported.

You have two weeks, Black Spot. You'll finish it. I know what you mean about comments on the Newborn thread, though. Somebody said my Pandora looked like a forty-something woman doing some gardening. I used my 18 year old daughter as a model for the pose.
I don't know who she'll kill first if she ever reads that comment; the guy in question for making it, or me for painting her that way!
