Rushlord: Yeah I think that one's ok, could use more work still. I guess it reminds you of Manet only because of the subject. Not my favourite of his and I actually enjoy the first version of it more and Goya's Tres de Mayo even more. Thanks for taking the time.

Comp study after a Fallout 3 concept artwork by C.Mullins. Been quick but fun.
After a pic from a Caer's blog, can't seem to remember who, sorry. (let me know if you know) I stubbornly used a brush too sharp for the job.
I'm not too keen on drawing this kind of random generic stuff but it really just started as a value practice thing and then thought I should try to colour a grayscale for a change. (original res so quite tiny)

Ceeche: I can't remember exactly but yeah I think that one's a combination of brushes and some sharpen tool at places. I believe most (more or less) interesting effects in photohsop are combinations. but it takes time and practice to find something that works with your idea. I've only realised the importance of texture a couple of months ago, I'm looking more and more into it now. Thanks for the feedback!

This is a preliminary sketch for a God of War painting I'm planning to do, you could call it fanart I guess... At the begining the idea popped up in my head as a flat Kratos-vs-group comp, pretty much like the sketch below. Then I remembered those annoying silly archers in the game and there I'd found my sitting ducks for the image.
A colour palette test, not really happy with it so that's another thing to think about seriously before starting on the actual painting.
A lil' update on the preliminary colour sketch from the other day. What do you guys think?

Texture experiment, something interesting might come out of this.
Took this gouache to try the camera on my new phone. And well, I'm much happier with the camera than my study (from photo: source ).

I'll probably go back and tidy the drawing of the hills, they just look like an ocean of spinach!
Hmm, not too keen on the gesture of his farther half but this did help at working out most of the modelling. I think doing these will save me a lot of noodling on the actual painting.
Im really enjoying those experiments man, and the painting with the glaring sun is reeally nice, great colours.
The first new brush experiment reminds me of D S Hong's work, its really loose and lots of really great colours. Look it up if you havent heard of him. He does amazing work.

Ok, I changed the pose based on a quick pencil sketch, which you can see below in an exceptionally bad photo of it.
So the final will probably look something like this. Any thoughts, advice?

Great environments! I really like this one especially. So vibrant thanks to colors and textures.Your clouds also look very natural. This figure looks very solid. The new version looks much more dynamic but I think there's something weird in how the head and shoulders set in perspective. It kind of looks like the upper body's on the same level with the viewer, while the legs are viewed from below. The whip arm looks very long too, maybe because of the small head. Another nitpick is that I think the flagpole placed just in the center looks a bit distracting. When there's not much to lead the eye to the other side, to me it kind of separates the sides. Could be just me though. Anyway, keep up the good work!

great sketchbook! your environments are so vivid and believable, yet still hav a painted look. I often dislike when images entirely loose their 'painted' feel and look gritty like a photo, and you get around it well =]

Exploring low value contrasts.
An old 2009 sketch mostly based on memory, from a hall of residence where I used to be at the time. I reworked it a little.
This is also an old sketch I revamped some.
My entry for the last EoW, with slight changes from the version I submitted for the poll.

Hi SouMeng, some interesting textures your getting and I like how you have played with the opacity on the book shelf. The scull looks as though it could use some deeper shadow tones. Also the lines running parallel to the wall on all the objects in the background look to be vanishing in different directions, are they all orientated in the same direction? and therefore would they use the same vanishing point?
Dr. Quinn: Yes the perspective is all over the place and some shadows are not as light or dark as they should have been, and etc. The reason behind all of those deliberate 'mistakes' is that I approached the painting with the intent to produce something as close to my perception of the scene as possible. And my visual perception of life and that of many of us is erratic, instinctive and not often photographic.
When I was painting the skull, My eye went from the red-lit part of it to the upper book shelf, spontaneously ignoring the lower ones to look up at the yellow folder, then it would glide down the diagonal shadows of the shelves on the wall to the mess on the small table and the piece of furniture with the green drawers now ignoring the telly resting on it. So both the upper shelf and the table lower down had to fit in my rectangle canvas at around the same height thus causing a perspective contradiction.
Concerning the contrasts on the skull, the red light of the mouse on it was both bright and very chromatic meaning if I used white to make the red brighter I would loose the chroma and vice versa (same problem faced here with the rear lights of the cars by Joseph Branko Zbukvic). So I have reduced and darkened all the contrasts of the scene a little so that the most chromatic red in Photohsop would match the bright red light on the eye socket.
Now I'm typing all this just to show that my intent is a little different from what you probably assumed when you looked at the painting. In other words, Its a medicore painting but not an I-didn't-do-my-perspective-homework kind of mediocre.
Here's a less blow-hardish life drawing, a plein-air charcoal I drew down the Cher river when I was there a couple days ago with a painter friend... and the heat and the flies and the pain. Was quite fun.
Seeing how it's been a long time since I even looked at his work, I was surprised how George Iness-y this one came out.
