Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Animal Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine . Please post all images & questions in this thread.
So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, model it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!
This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!
What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challange however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!
What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine . There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month. For a valid entry, just make sure your final image is posted in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th May 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th May to the 15th May 2008, when the winners will be announced (by me)! We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine ; these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!
Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline, as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging only.
Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!
Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!
1st Place Any 3 items from the 3DTotal Shop. We sell lots of items these days, such as our book , Design Studio Press books, textureCDs, Shorts DVDs, lots of training DVDs, and 12 month subscriptions to 2DArtist Magazine and 2DArtist Magazine .
Any 2 items from the 3DTotal Shop.
Any 1 item from the 3DTotal Shop.
We do unfortunately have to limit prizes to 1 book per winner per challenge, due to high postage costs for heavier items.
Everyone who entered can cast a vote of their top 3 in order, and the 3DTotal/2DArtist team will also cast their votes. We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!
This month we have chosen CAVEMAN!
Here is a selection of Images from a simple Google search to give you some good references for this month’s brief!
Please don't start new threads: all design sketches, WIPs, feedback should go in this thread! Final Images should be posted in the 'VOTING' thread, which will be created at the end of the month.

Going to try to get into this one
Great stuff! ...is anyone else interested? getting a little lonely in here...
This sounds fun! Sketched this guy up last night.
Edited: Added a pretty much finished version, still some polishing to do!
Edited again!: It's Finished, one question. Do the creepy eyes in the background read well enough as eyes? Thanks guys.

And here's his sabretooth sidekick.
Hehe this sounds like a great deal of fun! I'll see if I have time to participate.. I'd like to join in on the weekly's too.. quite new here so.. I spend most of my time on ImagineFX's forum.
Anyway, nice to meet you all
I'll jump in on this one
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those that mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind."-Dr. Seuss
Chuckmate thats slick. watch out he doesnt look like a younger lost santa with the fur having white edging etc.
this is suppost to look like someone we are all suppost to be terrified of. Just an idea though,... gonna get going on real one.
wowwee, great stuff in here already!! keep up the brilliant work, everyone.
agreed, cool stuff all!
i did this last night and saved some of the steps on a sheet. i was fiddling with it really long between the last two steps, and i am thinking of pushing the last version back one step towards the version before that... i'll leave it for a day or two, meanwhile comments would be most welcome
jpedro, i like the warm tones of the last version but i would leave the shoulderhear and lighting on his leftarm. Also try to keep the proportions of the arms in balance. Face looks good.
Did some polishing.
Refining and coloring.
This one has more humor, is it better?

I like the neon edges with this cavedude chuck.
Here's another update.
Toying around with the idea of having "cars"
This is a Turtrarri, 1 turtlepower, only consumes one apple / 10min. max speed 5 m.p.h, with a brand new shiny shell and maching leopardskin seats.
great topic lynette ..hope i can join this one ....
Damn great entries again, guys.
I started some sketching yesterday just to get to know the guy. This is what I've got so far.
Don't hesitate to comment
Brather: funny sketch, it could be a style thing but i think there is something about the head and the lower legs/feet and wrist that is a bit odd. If you have the colorsketch its probably easier to comment.
Tyjohn714: a caveman with only 3 hairs lol. I like the storytelling in the colorsketch. The colors look vibrant.
JLalfaro: cute cartoony character. The bleu lighting makes it more interesting but its only on the caveman, maybe add a source or some lighting in the background.
UCT: waiting for the real one
Chuck, mate: great one. I know what you do with the upperlip is a cartoony effect but how would it look if you would draw it ehm 'less cartoony' (does this make sense?).
Defiledvisions: i like the idea of a fashion caveman. The attributes could make it hilarious and you could go ballistic on the hair like in your first sketch, I'm curious on the outcome. Daring perspective too.
Paweu: very good sketch, the pose looks a bit static but lets wait and see.
I've posted my final already, now i'm gonna sit back and enjoy al you guys hard work
well tommoy -
what you call "cartoony" is more or less what I call "stylized".
which is - I think - the whole point of a stylized character in a stylized challenge.
of course.... everyone`s interpretation for
what is "stylized" around here varies. Alot.
I sometimes actually wonder- regarding these challenges - if people here really understand what stylized means.
it seems most participants don`t really get it.
Tommoy - thanks, yea first I thought about having some crazy hairstyle. But then I thought if the latest fasion and stuff, and thought of a hat. A crazy hairstyle wouldn't be wrong either, still working on that
Chuck - I agree with you, many interpret stylized differently. The first thing I thought of when I saw the SUPER stylised title was a caveman with the latest accesories etc. hehe.
Done with the linework on caveman - maybe in vain? if I change hairstyle, hehe. Anyway. Gonna work on his "car" now and then start coloring
*Update* Final lines done ( except scales on the snakebelt and details on his bracelet ). Now to the hard part, imho, colouring
*second update* Now the real challenge begins.. I changed his face. To make him look more goofy and caveman.
cheers // DV

Im court in two minds about this. I like the black and white but Im feeling I should put some colour in it. I'd like to say this is the final myself.
DEFILED VISIONS - Looks like the grooviest guy in bedrock. I like the cange in face and the turtle looks great.
I'm lovin that process shot gif you posted chuck. It's cool (and usefull) to see how u work. thanks for that. Also, JL.Alfaro, yours is coming along pretty nice too.

Not sure if I will be able to squeeze this in with this months schedule but here is what I am thinking of. The 'cave' man.
