Mind of Madness - yes, that's definitely true. I should hang some big sheets of paper on the wall and use my whole arm, actually. There won't be many updates for a while until i get a new camera/computer/scanner [actually i just go into town and scan them in at the internet cafe haha!]
Posted this in the Cannabis thread in the lounge already, so just the left side of the page for here.

Damn, pay for some scans and they come out too bright..
May have posted this before, but coloured now so should be alright
and some tech crap
still doin shit, but can't be bothered scanning it. so here's some year old stuff. it's funny, i spent years trying to get good, and go crap, then stop for a while only to do a drawing or two and get good again and then i have to work all the way up through being shit at it again, still in that phase now
ok some more..
pen drawing that started from NSFW reference, ended up as pretty much Due Sex fan art
and some other stuff, yes i am a little into politics lol
some watercolours and other shit
working from observation, Eva 02 model
sketching in Coromandel
studying from Rick Berry
studies from the Evangelion Concept Design Works, fucken great book that one is. Railgun developed from the T-Rident Land Cruiser's "arm"
oops, forgot one
sorry about the tilt, just the way the scan came up
more stuff.. ah shit the scans are still coming up too bright, but oh well. The watercolour is alright, pretty much looks like it actually does which suprises me a bit.
Couple sketches and my piece for the EOW for this week. Might stop posting in here soon, just because i'm using the site's bandwidth without buying any downloads or contributing to the site in any way.
Don't have access to life drawing classes at the moment so just studying from Victor Ambrus' life sketches. And some imagination stuff

Thanks Mat! I'm glad you like similar tunes
Not posting all that i do, just the better stuff, heh
Page that started with sort-of-good mecha designs, and turned into a mess of imagined characters, ha
and some self portraits
Of course by 'the best stuff', i mean it's all crap.
So many drawings that just aren't worth insulting your eyes with. It feels like i'm in the same place i was years ago, while i see so many others improving exponentially. Feeling so raped by the amazingness of people these days. There's dreams to be fulfilled, ideas to be executed and not a clear enough mind to remember them, remember to at least write down the idea to specify what kind of technical skills i'd need to pull that particular image off. Oh well, back to sketching
First image is imagination only (except for the Eva, lol), all below that are from observation (with minor exceptions, i'm all over the place)
Self-portraits that look nothing like me, lol. Some of them look like people i know
more crap lol
self-portraits from last night
fresh sketchbook Max
my favorite page is on post #151 something about that designs caught my eye a lot
keep it up
have a good one
sketchbook updated October 6th
Nice work keep it up!
Jamie, thanks man! That one was inspired by the illustrations from the first few pages of the Evangelion Concept Design Works, fucken epic paintings those are! I think the left wing is really the best part of it (funny as i'm so left wing politically ), because of that whole angular shape thing. That's the part of the drawing where i was connecting intimately with the work, which is when the best stuff seems to come out. The rest of it, especially the head, has major perspective issues (but even that wing could go more 'down-forward'). And that whole midsection is just a mess of wierd shapes i don't like, that's where i wasn't connecting with the work and just didn't know what i was doing. I want to do more like that, but definitely need to learn multiple point perspective (hard subject for me) and buy an A3 sketchbook next time as A4 is just too small to use the whole arm to draw ('Viper Orca Terra' was done on A3), which will mean buying a new camera to upload my shit as i dropped my camera in the river haha. But yeah, i really like that idea of colossal military craft, very sparth inspired also.
Also here's some inspiring shit, Yasushi Suzuki is amazing!!
Don't you just hate scanners that scan too bright? >_<
Self-portraits, spider bots, other shit
Haha, this SP isn't that bad, i just got really angry with the hand studies, fuck. But then i just got on with it and ended up with the SP's below this page
Another one of these 'skywhale' things
Hey hey Max. So, I notice that you're having trouble with hands... one thing that ultimately led to my being able to draw hands was the bridgeman books. For some reason his method of drawing hands seems to stick with me the most.
^^^ Find this book, it might help you like it helped me. Honestly there is a book thread here that probably has it in PDFs for you to look at
Also, to help with your scan problem... I tend to use the Photoshop adjustment of auto-levels. Usually it helps me get the brightness to a manageable level.
Anyway... hope this helps a little bit
you seem to constantly draw the jaw to small, I would recommend doing some studies, get a human skull from your local graveyard or find some refs on the interwebs.
And your lines seem to be a bit hard, try to loosen up a bit it helps you get more controll, and your wrist wont hurt anymore
so i've got this track on repeat for the.. 27th time? lol
Mat, thanks, i should do some more Bridgman. Will do when i get a new computer. Might even be able to get internet set up at home then, lol. I think the hand thing is alright though, just way out of practise, but always need more work on everything basically.
DStraX, human skull from my local graveyard? Haha! Thanks for that observation. Often when i draw self-portraits, i end up looking down more, and that could contribute to it, but i should just do anatomy studies in general anyway, because i do need them and don't know enough about the subject.
As to line weight, well from the beginning i've been dreaming of drawing realistic yet angular, and functional mecha with very light lines, yet darker in the areas closer to the viewer. Still very far away from achieving this, but one day hopefully. Line weight is really about relaxation, i think. Sometimes i am more relaxed and the lines come out lighter, but i do have a tense habit. I was reading through DanielC's thread a year or two ago and remember someone asking him how he got his lines so light. He said he couldn't answer the question because it's like asking a driver how they manage to stay on the road; it's the sort of thing that comes from years of practice, but being in love with the act of drawing is crucial for this.
Axelga, thank you! I elaborated more on that one in my last update, in response to Jamie Romoser (formerly OmertA)
Observation stuff, SPs hand studies and blah. Feelin' less angry with these ones haha
and a random sketch at 4am, this is when i realized it was time to crash
Studying from Robogabo, was gonna do a watercolour of this but eh, i couldn't get the sketch good in the first place
Quick sketch for the sci-fi gladitorial arena IOW, not gonna do it though
Well it's about time for an update, mostly poop. I should probably work into these more before posting them.. eh, i said i would only post the best of my shit but i'm posting some pretty stinky stuff here. Some 'good' stuff too, but whatever. I think it might be time to stop posting for a while to just get into it more, and hopefully produce something that's nice to look at.
Hey neat stuff man. You seem to be improving with the pen too. Keep at it.
cool stuff man! I love these landscape sketches among other things. keep doing this stuff and study value as well. i love your vehicle sketches and similar stuff. Maybe do some more finished stuff?
Right, time for an update after more than a month. Various stuff, some of it's even ..sort of good, but that good stuff still has various problems like positioning. I've been in the environment where i spent a lot of time growing up, going there, coming back to my flat, going again and again without updating at all. But i did sort of get the 'flow' that i was looking for, which comes and goes like water; only practice can keep it up and the internet is a great distraction from that.
Mind of Madness - cheers dude! I've decided that graphite is not my thing, that pen is the way to go. Graphite smudges, by movement of the hand while drawing but also by the pages themselves moving when i have my sketchbook in my bag. And, loyalty to Bic means not having to sharpen that pencil and to keep the point sharp; ballpoint is constantly sharp, and everything comes down to lineweight
Jason - thanks man! I am interested in a broad range of subjects, perhaps too broad.. value is possibly my next stage of development, though i still struggle with proportions and positioning. And yes, more finished pieces is a well advised suggestion!
Kungfoowiz - hell yeah man! Sketch all night hard! And yeah, Rick Berry, Phil Hale and Jon Foster are a triangle of masters. I'm listening to a podcast from Phil Hale right now actually
I will make a second update immediately with the second batch
\/ good right hand but everything else sucks
vodka on the right, drinking has been fun yes
Beast developed from a pillow, figure developed from a dude on his bike
Bad positioning here, didn't bother with a shadow either

Hey man, I'm liking the eva stuff and all the heads! I'd say do some larger, longer studies just to put to the test how far you've come.
PS - Which Eva 02 model is that? Something about it immediately reminded me of the older Kaiyodo figures you could get in the launch tube packaging.
Wow, took me a while to leave a reply on here since this SB is a lot to take in.
I love how have inspiration and music spread out the sketchbook that's awesome. In general you are a really good artist, your imagination is incredible!!! I feel like you have a lot ideas and so much in your head but its hard to get it out on paper. I'm sure you've heard that before.
I want to give you some good critique and advice to build off of, honestly most of this is just from the last page (the last page of SBs usually have the latest and most "learned" drawings, hope this doesn't sound lazy)
this drawing was good in general for anatomy and proportions, although the hand holding the sword looks wrong and i have the same problem (hands holding guns etc.), i love Evangelion too and their robot hands gripping stuff is amazing, in other drawings your heads seem to only have the front view and not many other angles. Try drawing heads in all 360 degrees or from the bottom and top.
this drawing is really cool, conept-wise i liked this. you catch your own mistakes so i won't say much, we both need to study perspective xD. the shading is nice
THIS DRAWING!!! blew my mind duuude! such great skill shows here. the rendering and shading and imagination!!!. It is more of a mural/illustration. i like to do illustrations and mural type things too, no perspective!!! xD
this one is excellent, i'd just look at the jaw size like the person above said and whatnot.
Good stuff man and thanks for dropping by my SB.
