I'm going to be working on polishing up/finishing some of these this week to get ready for Illustration Self Promotion class next quarter. Let me know which ones you like, which ones need work and which ones should be dropped. Comments, critiques, wanted and appreciated!
1 An Orc
2 A Draenei
3 A Rune Sword
4 Hamlets Fathers Ghost
5 Red Riding Hood meets the Wolf
6 Where the Wild Roses Grow
8 Beauty and the Beast (underneath it all)
9 Fahrenheit 451
10 Arctic Undead (For COW)
11 Under the Deep
12 Max Starwind (Treasure Hunter Galactica!)
hey man you got some great stuff )) i see a lot of wc influence i love the game haha
One thing that bugged me in the first picture is the axe edge.. it starts looking more like a flat side of a thick axe which ends up looking like a hammer..
also considering the distance that the fire sword is at to troll's face i think it would actually light it up more since the sword seems to be glowing quite a bit
other than that i really love the stuff
the lion with the woman is so magestic
Oh yeah I see what you are saying about the axe, Ill try and make the sharp part look more axe-like. For the fire sword, the piece is supposed to show off the sword and I didn't want to draw too much attention to the troll, so I subdued the lighting. Thanks!
Wow, some really good stuff here
I really like "The Orc" and "the Beauty and the Beast" one. They are crisp where they need to be crisp and abstract where they need to be abstract. Wonderful.
The ones I lean most towards dropping would be "The Draenei" and "Fahrenheit 451."
I think for "Fahrenheit 451" the composition is kind of uninteresting in that it has few elements to draw on, and the lighting and textures aren't working well, and would be hard to get right. All and all i don't know if it would be worth your time to try and get it up to the level of some of your other works.
The Draenei piece has some good lighting potential, but the composition is not as descriptive regarding the context of the character as many of your other pieces. Perhaps more importantly however, it reads the most "fan art" of all your work. Since Draenei are a race and design specific to (and i'm sure copyrighted by) Blizzard, the piece may not be right for a portfolio.
Awsome stuff! thanks for sharing!
...my humble and uneducated opinion.
While I like your use of colour, the edges in your work often seem a bit "fuzzy" or smeared. Some sharpness would really increase the impact of your work
#2 and #10 are weak and need to go. The others look good.
Mute:: Thanks, Ok I'll drop #9 and #2. Yeah, the Fahrenheit one seams like more trouble than it would be worth. Thanks for your comments.
Menno:: I agree, I'll work on sharpening then up where they need sharpening. Thanks!
sarsipious101, copperfire:: Thanks for your advice, consider them dropped.
OK. Here is one more I forgot to post, its unfinished and I'm considering dropping it.
#13 The Warlord
I really like the Beauty and the Beast one, as well as 7 and 6 (though having the woman's mouth open slightly in 6 would make her look more dead, I think -- I know the song so I'm guessing that's what you were going for?)
The Orc - I agree about the axe. I think the problem is just with the shading you've done on the edge of the blade - it makes the edge look thick, not flat.
I also agree about the rune sword - I think that you can add more highlights on the face and still keep the focus on the blade.
5 - I'm confused about the placement of the wolf's limbs. Is he crouching or misshapen? The tree in the foreground looks unfinished.
9 - I agree about this one. The perspective of the background is odd.
13 - the warlord - I think the dynamics of this piece would make it a good addition but I think the mammoth looks too small and too slender.
I think the last two in the first set are brilliant
Im on the fence about #6 (the woman in water).
It shows variety in the collection, but it doesn't seem to hold
up to the higher intensity that all the other pictures have.
Maybe that's a nitpick though.
._Bound by Laws, the Beautiful Things_.
Snake-Woman:: 6 - Mouth open, good idea, I'm doing it. 3 - More highlights on the troll, alright if you guys insist! 5 - You aren't the first person to mention that, hmm, I guess I got to work on the drawing and move some things around. 9 - Yeah, the perspective is all messed up, I would probaly have to build a miniature library out of foam core and take pictures for reference. 13 - really? OK, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for all your comments!
Jokke:: Thanks. Yeah, I think I will try to tighten up the edges and hopefully made it more intense.
Here is the revision of the orc one, Hopefully the axe is more axish. I also transform warped the head around to make it accurate perspective-wise as well as source material-wise (more orcish.) I added some drool and other little changes. Let me know what you think
yea much nicer! u got skills dude
I must say I don't feel like your second one is as good as the rest, but mind you, it's not bad, it's just not representative of the level I see in the rest of your works, I feel like it need a bit more refining and detailing to be at your other work's level. Other then that, it looks simply amazing!
I don't know Im getting a feel of a "fanart" may not be good in a portfolio, but the execution specially on the orc piece is wonderful
the wolf/reindeer is fine but it doesn't show any perspective or spatial placement unlike your other stuff, he just seems flat like a sticker.
the fireman piece just has wrong perspective , it could be more dramatic with a better perspective
the mammoth piece can be more epic! by enlarging the animal. You definitely got the composition! hope this helps
