This thread will be showing off my final year project for university (Computer Games Art). I needed somewhere where I can receive excellent crits and also document all my work, written and art related in one place for myself. So this project will be focusing on games such as those made by Bioware, as this is the dream company I would be aiming for eventually. The first few posts of mine will just be getting up some old stuff that I have completed (until revised of course).
Anyway, lets get this show on the road!
An estimated three hours of game play will be fully illustrated. Preliminary sketches will be built and changed upon for final polished designs to show development. One of the finished characters will be recreated using a 3D program such as 3DSMAX and Zbrush to model and create a normal map from.
The concept art booklet will contain 40+ pages of digital and/or traditional work, complete with detailed descriptions of designs and influences. The booklet will contain details of the following : Weapons, armour, creatures, characters, locations, vehicles and items.
The written work should detail location descriptions, creatures, characters and vehicles. Thought processes will be recorded as will any back story for the game idea to help visualize and flesh out the concept art.
The Galaxy Zindarz:
This galaxy in which the game takes place is drastically different from our own. From a distance it may seem to be one of the most beautiful places in the universe. Full of mystical colours and expressive shapes, but on the surface it is a violent and unpredictable destination to the unwary traveller.
The system is made up of two interlinked asteroid belts that snake off from each other in a magnificent loop that intercept and pierce the galaxy rings. But due to this linked section it can cause stray asteroids to depart there rhythmic course and thus quite rarely but still possibly put a neighboring planet in danger. Such as the now battered and long forgotten Liptroen which has undergone thousands of years of violent destruction due to the asteroid belt.
Although most of the galaxy is made up of destroyed planets and forgotten rock there are parts which contain livable areas that somehow have hardly sustained injury from the surrounding devastation and growth.
These planets are found on the outer areas of the galaxy away from the violent disk which spirals through a gigantic neighboring nebula.
This nebula will eventually form billions of stars and quite possible another sun by the size of it, although will only be of benefit to the future neighboring civilizations if it stops growing any time soon. Not to mention if this new sun will disrupt the way of life as they know it. This has been the discussion of endless debate and many of the planets inhabitants have found other parts of the galaxy to dwell in, scared that something disastrous will happen some time soon.
Cruiser lanes can be seen faintly from great distances as red dots trailing off from each planet. These are used for the safest routes to trade and travel into other destinations, although on the odd occasion can be disrupted by a freak comet or other outer space debris.

The Dratons :
Intimidating insect like species, who rule in the far away planet of Triton. The planet is mainly made of crystal, a jewel filled sphere if ever there was one. Some of these crystals have magical properties to them making the race of Dratons a rich and formidable species as a whole. Respected by the other species even though behind there backs you shall always hear jokes and jealous comments of there kind.
It was the Dratons who ‘rescued’ the humans from there impending doom long ago on earth. Although the alien race wont admit it was only for the good of their kind and only of use to them as slaves.
Being almost insect like in nature, the Dratons see life as a means of power and hard work. There is no real means to there power hunger, only pride that they are probably the only species in the galaxy that can work together as one. Devoid of many emotions and incapable of love there culture is a dark and straightforward one.
Below is some general thumbs to get a feel for the Dratons, still deciding one which to take further...
great stuff man!!!nice start on the SB, and welcome to CA
pld: NEED CRITIQUE! But BEWARE your Eyes might BLEED OUT of YOUR eye SOCKETS <---cause I really suck and haven't done shit pld:
My Sketch Book!
What you have now is GREAT work cant wait to see the rest!
WTF, that is some crazy work, love the style and thanks for the feedback.
Took number 11 a bit further, will probably undergo some changes, and will also add the details of this type of Draton and some sketches of different poses etc.
Oh and thanks for the comments guys, I left you one in your sketchbooks. Cheers
Crits and comments welcome above all!

Heres a quick page of various actions the Lurker Draton could do. Just to get some idea of his poses in game.
Oh and as promised here is a brief description of the Lurker :
Draton Larkers :
These guys are silent for the most part, not very talkative and prefer to stay in the shadows. As such In the sorting factory at the beginning of the game you will usually see these keeping a good eye on the humans from above in the rafters, silently swinging from one rafter to the other, hanging from there claw like back end limb. The claw can be locked onto a rafter also which allows the Larkers to sleep suspended upside down. If you were a worker in the Dratons factory and looked up towards the ceiling it would be common for you to spot 4 or 5 sets of beady white eyes peering down at you.
Probably the least intimidating of the Dratons as a race, and not exactly that intelligent either. They are known for there high awareness only. When they spot humans or anything not right in the factory you will hear a loud screeching noise much like an alarm, the ear piercing noise coming from the lurker will set off the other lurkers in a screeching frenzy which in turn will allow the higher up Dratons to check out the scene.
Personally I'm about to enter a game design college, so its very interesting to see what your able to do in your last year of the study.
All critics/comments are much appriciated
To be honest with you university is still more or less like learning on your own, in that they dont actually Teach you everything like in college, meaning you have to make the effort on your own with some guidance. I wish you luck!
Heres a quick look at the map of the solar system, not including planets I wont be going into on this project. Obviously if this was made by a big company I would add in loads of little planets and stuff, but as it goes I only have 2 hands and 4 other big projects to hand in, so best to limit myself huh?
Draton Slicer Concept, Should really be doing back views to these dudes as well...something to add to the list!
Going to take the inspiration I got from Androids tutorial on Zbrush thumbnails and see what gets spat out of my brain! *rubs hands together eagerly*
Seems like you've got a nice project going on here
Those alien designs are cool, they really belong to each other but are still different, which is good. They also, however, look a little flat because they lack some real shading. For a side/front view this could be fatal because when putting them in 3d you might find you didn't define the shape enough. There's some blurring going on as well, which really distracts my eyes. I'm not sure if you did it intentional, but if so some difference in contrast and darkness helps to create depth much better as you can keep the outlines sharp.
I really dig this project you worked up. It shows alot of creative thinking and hard work. I think your creatures could use a little more intentional design to their anatomy (designed to look in a way that supports their behavior) and could use more flow in their overall body shape, but I like the variety. The planet and space paintings are awesome, cool stuff.
Yoitisi : Cheers man! Glad to hear they all support each other in some way, that was my main goal, to keep them insect looking but not really that similar in silhouettes. I imagine them as a kind of sub species to each other, not like ants in that way where most look similar to each other. Thanks so much for the crit, I needed that, will try to trick the viewer with contrast, color etc instead of blurring. Thanks again!
KelsM : Thankyou! Your right, some parts weren't thought through that well anatomically. I have to get back to studying anatomy some more and will most probably come back to these to fix them as you said. I know there not exactly human but I see your point entirely, all things are mirrored to each other in some way and learning human anatomy, along with animals will help me. Cheers bud!
Anyway, had a fun night re watching Android and having a blast with his Zbrush magic. Will probably use these later in the project once I decide on a home for them...will be looking a bit further into this Zbrush painting and seeing what I can come up with that dont look more or less exactly like Androids style.
Thanks for the comments and crits again guys, there gold dust.
Hardly anything to show right now, Last Man Standing has been kicking my ass, and am preparing to take the first alien creature into a sculpture (not 3dsmax style but clay). Also tons of written work keeping me busy, but here is a quick armour test using Androids method of shapes form his download. If you havent already brought it I strongly advice you too, it has certainly taught me a thing or two! Cheers!
Here is a bigger type of Draton, used to take care of the humans and other species using brute force.
Two acid sacks to the side of his face allows the Draton to spit out acid at you. The same goes for his sack like lower arms, although to double the ferocity of the attack, he holds two lava slugs which act as a flamethrower for the acid claw sacks (He can spit out acid from his claws too) . Obviously the best way to confront one of these dudes would be to take out his slugs first, resulting in him getting damaged from the lava splash back. Then keep your distance and take out his acid sacks, after that you will just have to hammer away at him.
Last of the Dratons for now, moving onto another part of the project. Hope you liked these ugly bastards, bye!
Something I couldent help but paint up last night The egg laying mother! May or may not use this concept or will probably change it to look a little less like the 'aliens' movie one. Spent too much time on it too, should have been a very rough sketch. Oh well, enjoy!
Forgot to show this sorry!
Just a little sneak peak of the Draton I decided upon sculpting in clay...unfortunately I can only work on it when I get back home from university, which wont be for another 2-3 weeks yet and this is the only pic I had of it to show a little progress Anyway, hope ya like him! Cheers!
neat stuff here, cant wait to see more. oh yea the sculpture is coming along nicely too.
working hard to improve little by little...
Cheers Shin, heres a few quick mood paintings. Nothing amazing, working on the actual first level layout which is so much more time consuming then this...thinking of level flow and interaction with characters etc is a pain in the butt!
Top painting is a kind of security gate, scanning the ship entering the factory to check for hostiles.
Second one down is a quiet part of the factory, a dull humming from the electrical generators is all that can be heard.
Bottom painting is more of a wide shot to show the size of this place. Wanted that construction factory look to this and think I achieved it with the skeletal look of some parts of the structure.
More coming soon!
Those three enviros look pretty solid!
Not to sure about how you used your z brush shapes for armor. The shapes just look random, and really look anything like armor. I would advise making some of the shapes larger. As in a single shape for the breast plate, a single shape for the shoulder piece, and so on.
Cheers Sublimus, thanks for the input! Yeah I keep looking at that Zbrush armour and keep seeing borg anyway so will have to simplify a lot like you said. Good stuff my friend!
Some REALLY Quick ships designs for the Zindarz Project.
The ones on the left were the initial ideas, each taking at most 20 seconds, and at least a 4 seconds. Again, looking at shapes and nothing more to begin with. The 10 on the right are more final designs from the left hand side, being the ones I preferred visually to the others. Will do a couple of high detail textures ships soon enough but I think this is enough for the time being
Trying to be a bit versatile but try not to fret! Human and anatomy will be coming soon enough!
I am very sorry, I just found it elsewhere Obviously, it is a bug - I see Alice Duke's artwork in every your signature and in some other random posts. Well, it happened other time with Texahol icon, omg.. It's me or it's CA? Anyway, really sorry about that.
