One tried and true method that many animators used is a mirror at your drawing table. You can make any face you want in the mirror. Instant reference. It will help you get in touch with what happens on the human face when it goes through different emotions. It takes some practice... but so does anything. A very large amount of rendering the human form is actually about critical observation. You have to get really good at looking at people. As silly as that may sound... you want to be able to look at a person and assess which of their attributes are important for your work. What are the key things that make a smile a smile? How much teeth showing? How plumped up do the cheeks get? Do the eyebrows raise? Do the corners of the eyes crease? What happens with their nose and upper lip when they smile?
See what I mean? A ton of stuff going on in a simple smile. And there are millions of variations on that even.
Get a small mirror by your drawing table and get to work.
