Good eve. I'm trying to get into landscape painting and thus started working on a wee colour/composition test. I thought I'd post it now in a super early stage and get feedback and crit on those elements now before I start working into it. Paintovers, general advice and slagging welcome. Cheers!

its a pretty good start. you need to get into smaller details.
One thing about color though, right now your clouds look a little 'muddy'. If your working from reference go back and study the subtle color changes, but I'd make a guess that there is a pinkish color that comes between the yellow light and the grey clouds. pinkish purplish probably.
just going from white/yelow/grey makes your clouds seem smoggy and flat.
going from white/yelow/pinkish/cool grey makes them more like 'water' clouds. Gives them some life.
Well, to me it's obvious that this is a very good palette to being your landscaping works, but it's of my opinion that something like this should be left alone. It's really good.
Well thumbmnail works great so in my mind comp and value work - just some detail needed to give the eye something to grip to. Perhaps something in the top right corner, a dragon or bird flying towards the city in the distance. Though I could be wrong, it has been known

Thanks for the crit guys, I'll start working into detail now then.
codenothing: this isn't referenced, I'll try adding some pinkish tones in to the mix.
Okay, reworked the sky and the image, I wanted a slightly darker, moodier feel.
Now it needs some close-up elements, can anyone suggest anything/paint anything they think would suit? The obvious choice would be a figure overlooking the environment but I figured I'd post here first to see what y'all think.
As ever thanks for crit/paintovers and all that jazz.
Keep it going, man, I'd like to see this finished as it's going well. Sorry for a pointless post, by the way lol.
Okay, there's the final design Not too sure if the lighting on the character works, let me know.
As for a vague story:
"As she rounded the final peak, the paladin found herself transfixed on the view in front of her. The City; a shining beacon of hope, it's soft lights heralding food, rest and safety. For so long she had traveled, battling both the elements of nature and the forces which sought to destroy her. The sun blinded her tired eyes, her legs ached and her hands bore the scars of battle, yet for the first time in an age she ceased her flight and stood quite still, letting the warmth flow through her body. The paladin smiled. She was home."
Everyone say "awww".
Crit welcome as ever, cheers for looking.

Hey, well that last one looks really nice and after seeing the second one I was about to tell you to stick something in on the right but you've already taken care of that, the only thing that looks a little off to me are the clouds they look textured but not really in the way that clouds usually are, sorry can't really explain it better than that but hey anyway nice image in my opinion.
Nice work here! To give you some crits: I think the compostition works except the center of the image, it seems too empty. Just a simple indication of lighting or waves on the water should help.
I also think the horizon line is just a tad too high for the eye level of the composition.
Nice work overall, though
Alrighty, thanks for the comments guys!
Apts: Cheers for the crit, I could look into the texturing on the clouds some more - the piece was unreferenced so I'm not surprised there's a few issues there.
Whyatt Thrash: Glad you like it mate
Anthriel: I can certainly work on the center of the painting, I'm glad you didn't suggest adding a boat or anything haha. I'll throw some more light onto it and see how it looks.
Thanks again all!
Yesterday night there were some amazing clouds in the sky and I instantly came to think of you. I took a picture with my cell phone, but it didn't really come out as impressive. You only see a part of it now but you get the basic idea, the clouds where spreading out like a spanish fan all over the sky, it keeps going to the left and right of the pic...
Well, hope this could be some piece of inspiration. Enjoy!
Wow, that's pretty exciting! Looking forward to doing some more landscapes so I'll bear that in mind - I like the flare from the street lamps..
I watched the progress, you are doing very well, on the last update the scenery looks quite detailed and has a "mood" already
Thanks, I'll be posting some new stuff soon.
